Does Sprint have to do this upgrade at a store?

Re: Sanyo 8300 has new software version 1.007sp

Unfortunately yes. The phone is supposed to be able to do it on it's
own using the 'update phone' function. However it doesn't work because
it appears that Sprint never deployed the ability on their end even
though they did for other phones. Gotta love Sprint sometimes. But
the worst part about this is that some Sprint stores are now refusing
to do these software updates for free and want to charge $35. This is
a violation of company policy because the charge is only suppose to
apply to a software update that doesn't fix a serious issue on the
phone. This update does contain several key fixes and it should be
free for all customers who want it. But the stores are often
    interpreting these rules differently.

I can't say that I know for sure, but I suspect that if they
are bona fide Sprint stores they must all abide by the same charging
policies. Further, I think it's agreed that unless you're rather
knowledgeable about this stuff, you're not going to seek a software
update. The average dude or dudess on the street has never even heard
of a PRL, much less updated their phone for it. Firmware updates are
much more obscure, so it's hard to imagine there's a profit motive
involved. $35 is a large portion of the cost of a new phone these
days, so something doesn't sound right here.

I guess I'll find out soon enough.

I should have put this in my previous post but another factor
that mitigates against such charges is that it's rarely immediately
clear what a firmware update corrects or improves, so how would most
people know they want it, much less that it's worth $35 bucks?

PS: Does anyone know what this update does?

Just an FYI. Two people on another discussion forum were able to get
this new update using the update phone function. Why it works for some
and not others remains a mystery.

I just did it on both of mine. I was amazed at how efficiently
    it proceeded. I'm in NYC.

Now I hope someone will post what this update does.

    Thanks for the information. DGI

Update works in KCMO. The update is suppose to improve the multimedia
    functions.

The update will only work if your 8300 has or previously had version
1.005 and the new yellow sprint logo on it. The original batch of
8300's had version 1.004 and the old red sprint logo. Version 1.004
    does not support FOTA.

Actually, one of my 8300's has the old logo, one the new (long
story), both came with 1.005SP and both updated. You're correct, I'm
sure, but some late models still have the old logo.

    My experience with the 'upgrade'.....

    Before I started..

    - I had NO maintenance plan
    - Phone was @ 1.004SP level
    - OTA update would not work

I went to the SPRINT(corporate) store and found out
    - Updates were no longer 'free'
    - In-store service is on a 'tiered' plan for those not on a maintenance
    plan
    $15/$30/$50
    - Software up would be $15(plus tax)
    - If I 'took' the update, I could also sign-in up for a maintenance plan for
$3/month after that, that covered every thing on the phone in the future
except physical abuse, water damage, loss, etc.
    - If I 'took' the update. and signed up for the maintenance plan, it would
    cover future problems IN-STORE.
    - Without a 'maintenance plan', problems are now serviced by manufacturer
with an average turnaround of 2 WEEKS!

I paid the $15 and took the plan.......

Got the phone back, and found up they had 'upgraded' me to 1.005SP!! (All
that upgrade is, as I understand it is the unlock of OTA, and the new SPRINT
    LOGO!)

Used the OTA upgrade, which NOW works, and upgraded myself to 1.007SP!

Does anyone have the LIST of the features in 1.007SP?

I have some details, I have noticed:
    - Better layout of details in Call History
    - Better/easier changing of 'options'

Yes as long as you have version 1.005sp your phone should update over
the air. I assumed that all of the old red logo phones had 1.004sp but
    I guess not.
