Hey all,
I see the USB cable for the Katana on ebay for about 6 bucks with
shipping, but no software. I'm a N00B when it comes to this stuff on
phones, but can you load ringtones and pictures to and from the phone
with the USB cable alone, or do you need some required software? 30
bucks for the software??? Yikes.
Thanks

You can not use the USB to transfer ringtones to/from the phone. I have
not found any software that supports anything other than:
- Backup and Restore Contacts (using Data Pilot)
- Read images from the phone (Data Pilot or BitPim)
The only way that I have been able to get rightones onto the phone is by
using the SprintPCS Phone Uploader at:
http://rumkin.com/tools/sprint/index.php

Sweet! Thanks for the info Mike. Your disclaimer scares me a little
though, lol. Maybe I'll try it on my gf's phone first?

I would not let the disclaimer scare you. It is not my disclaimer or my
site, but I have used it quite a bit with my phone and my wife's phone
(both are Katanas) and it has worked great for me. I have used it to
install ringtones and applications on my phone. No problems here.

What type files does Katana use for ringtone (midi, wav, mp3)?
If I transfer the audio file to Katana how do I set it up as a ringtone?
Thanks.

The Katana can take soundfiles in midi and QCP format. It will not take
mp3 files. See the page at http://rumkin.com/tools/sprint/formats.php#qcp
for info on QCP files. I tried downloading one to my phone and they sound
horrible. They are 8kHz mono soundfiles that are highly compressed.
When you use the phone uploader at rumkin.com to download a midi or QCP
file to your phone it will be saved in the Ringers folder under "My
Content". You can play that file from there to preview it. You can also
select it as your default ringer for all calls or as a custom ringer in the
Contacts list.

Re: Katana USB
I think this Rumkin tool is fantastic. I've been looking and calling
all day for something that would let me put some pictures from my PC on
my Katana phone. This is the first thing, and only thing, that I have
found.
They get downloaded into the Screen Saver area. Does anyone know how
to either redirect them or at least how to move them to the picture
area once they are on the Katana?

ring tones from the movie MAY
Jaye Barnes Luckett and ATE 13 are listed artists for the movie
soundtrack <http://www.lulu.com/content/310300> called _Quel Horror!_
The movie is /May/ <http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0303361/> and if you see
it, you too might agree that a ring tone from this film could be quite
amusing in that the character of May has a weird manner with handling
telephone relationships. iTunes has the entire ablum available for
download. I am particularly fond of the song *Frox*, but *Weighting* is
also a catchy tune. The movie is the perfect Halloween stay-at-home
activity, and I searched and searched under Sprint's genre ringer
archive under movie tones and holiday/halloween tones. My only choice of
the lot was to download the Alfred Hitchcock theme. It sounds terrible
and I can barely hear it even when the volume is set to full blast.
Rip-off!! if I ever heard one.
Any (and all) /May/ fans should set themselves a goal to convince Sprint
to obtain the ringer tone rights to that film. I too wondered about
doing the conversion and uploading job myself, but I have enough on my
hands as it is what with blogging, zineing, cssing and holding down a
day job.

You can not use the USB on the Katana to transfer ringtones or pictures
to the phone. You can use BitPim to transfer pictures from the phone. I
am not sure if there is a linux app to talk to the phone.
