I bought a razr phone with sprint svc on 12/19. I got my first bill and am
being charged my first month from 11/22-12/21. How is it possible to start
my 'first month' of svc well before I even bought the phone?

    that indicates your billing cycle.
    they usually prorate the bill.
if the bill is more than it should be then dial *2 on your phone and ask for clarification.

I am not in daily possesion of the phone to do that. I'll call cust svc later today. I was also charged an activation fee where I was promised at pos that there was none.

if the PROMISE is not in writing or from a reputable individual, you might be out of luck.
get back to the person that promised the no activation fee.

Because you won't actually be paying for that entire month.

You'll be prorated and only pay for 12/19 through 12/21. But the
billing period is still 11/22 through 12/21.

Like all landline and cellular companies and many other utilities,
Sprint bills one month in advance. The first bill is prorated, then
you are billed in advance for monthly charges every month. Roaming
charges and other charges that SPrint can't bill in advance are billed
    in arrears.

Can't say for sure in regards to their current practice,
but when I signed up with Omnipoint (now
T-mobile), they billed for each cycle
    at the end of it.

But you're absolutely right that the usual case
with most utilities and many others these
days (and certainly used to be/still is
with Verizon landline) is that you prepay
the "basic" service fee for the upcoming
month, and you pay for any additional stuff
(such as long distance charges) for the
    precvious one.

This means that the very first bill will
typically be about 1.5 - 2 times the expected
    amount since you're paying:

a: about 1/2 a billing cycle for the
    first month
b: a full pre-pay for the next month.

(and maybe more... if there's an
    activation fee).

I'm a current T-Mo USA customer and I believe they do bill in advance.
I was never an Omnipoint customer, having only signed up within the
past 12-18 months. But I'll have to look at my bill to be sure! I
generally never look at the bill, since they're always paid by the wife.

I had a similar experience two weeks ago with the activation fee.

I was helping my wife's parents get a pair of cellphones on a shared plan
while they were visitin from out of town. They had a single Tmobile
phone and wanted to get a phone for each of them. I checked online and
saw that they could get a pair of Katana phones for $49.99 (buy one, get
one free) with free shipping and no activation charge.

We wanted to get the phones right away and not wait for the shipping so I
could help them with the phones before they went home. We went to a
Sprint store and noticed that they also had the Kanata at $49.99 for the
first one and a free second phone. They were going to charge $36 (first
line) and $26 (second line) activation charges. I told the sales rep
that I knew they could get free activation online and requested that they
match that offer. I was told that they could do that and waive the
    activation charge.

A week later the first bill appeared online and sure enough it contained
a total of $62 in activation charges. I clicked the link "Ask a question
about my bill" and told them that we had been told that activation would
be free but it was charged anyway. A day later we received an email
saying that activating a phone was a complicated and costly process,
yadda... but then stated that the charge (plus the resulting taxes) were
    credited to the account.

I would suggest going online and clicking the link to send an email
question. It may work for you. Make sure to state that you were
    promised free activation.

Every month I am on the phone to sprint to get erroneous charges taken off!
I wonder how many people just pay without ever checking?

Why not? Is this not your account?

You can also call 1-888-211-4727 from any phone to reach customer care.

A sprint phone svc rep (called toll free number on paper bill) was helpful in pointing out that I was prorated and am paid through most of this month, so i am good with that. He was also helpful in refunding the $36 activation fee.

I have been with Sprint for 2 years and have run into more error than I
    would care to count.
