Neither Verizon nor Cingular work at my house, yet T-Mo, Sprint and
Nextel do. I'm not naive enough to think that "proves" who has
    better coverage nationwide, however!

I always enjoyed it when my Sprint friend had to ask me for my Verizon
phone to connect to a number for more than three or four seconds at a
    time.

I do note that people in other parts of the country say that Sprint works
well in those parts. I note also that it's been a couple of years since
I've known anyone with Sprint; things might have changed. But then, I
might have overlooked a billion dollar deposit to my checking account,
    too.

Sprint phones won't roam if a Sprint signal is also available,
regardless of how crummy the Sprint signal is, or how strong the
roaming signal is. This results in Sprint working in many places,
but not always particularly well in many of them, as it will eschew
the stronger Verizon or Alltel coverage for their own weaker signal.
An effect that gives Sprint "the best coverage on paper" of all
national carriers yet results in disappointment for many of it's
    actual users.

Disclaimer: I'm not a Sprint or Verizon customer- I use T-Mo, the
carrier with the undisputed weakest coverage of national carriers,
and it's good enough for my needs! I'd take Sprint over Verizon
personally for reasons of data costs, but I don't have to think my
carrier is the absolute best at everything to make it through the
day! Or, in language YOU might understand, Dubya,- I drank the T-Mo
Kool-aid, realized they forgot to put sugar in it, but swallowed
anyway because it was cheaper! ;-)

Similar to the situation with Verizon. If there's any chance you can get
the most miniscule signal from Verizon, the phone will not roam. In my
experience, that's been true of VZ, Sprint, and T-Mo (three of the four
carriers I've used since 1999) and is probably true of other carriers also.

True- I didn't mean to imply otherwise. I wasjust answering the
question why Sprint could have wrse coverage than Verizon if they can
    also roam on Verizon.

T-Mo, for example, has better coverage in rural Nebraska than in
Omaha because they have NO native coverage in rural Nebraska and rely
on roaming. Their native Omaha coverage stinks, and they don't allow
roaming in the Omaha metro because they offer native coverage there!
(Apparently no one has told T-Mo that Omaha has expanded westward in
the last fifteen years, and what once was farmland is now a bustling
    residential and commercial area!)

It doesn't have to make sense on alt.cellular groups. Think of it as 8
little boys sitting in a sand box bragging about which toy truck is
better that his mates. Same idea.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------

Here's something I hadn't noticed before. Go here:
    http://alltel.com/personal/wireless/...ndividual.html
Click on "North American Freedom" plan. Alltel is branching out!

"North American FreedomSM provides additional value for traveling to or
calling other countries within North America. In addition to National
Freedom coverage at home, the plans also include no roaming for package
and off-peak minutes in Canada, Mexico, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin
Islands. You can also call from the U.S. to those countries toll-free!
You also get unlimited Mobile-to-Mobile and My Circle calling from the
    U.S. coverage area."

Wasn't someone looking for coverage in Puerto Rico on here not long ago??

    http://alltel.com/docs/MexicoCityList.pdf
800 Mexican cities already covered. I didn't know there were that many
    in Mexico!

I think Alltel's getting ready to cover the new North American Union that
Bush-Fox-and the Canadian PM quietly signed an agreement to form without
asking the people of any of the countries. Payment will simply switch to
the Amero at the appropriate time of rollout. We, of course, won't be
asked if we want to consolidate the three countries....

It's why the US Gummit isn't arresting illegal aliens. They'll all be
automatic members of the NAU and can live where they are, anyways.

Sprint phones can be forced to roam regardless of the strength of the
available Sprint signal. To keep on getting free roaming with Sprint
you have to use more than half of your anytime minutes on the Sprint
network, but aside from that it seems like Sprint is the best of both
    worlds.

Interesting. I knew that older Sprint phones worked that way, but I
thought they "fixed" that in recent years.

    Thanks for the heads-up!

    Todd,

You sre only somewhat correct. Sprint phones have the ability to "force
roaming" mode. In other words, here is southern california, if I want to use
verizon, all that I have to do is to go into the "roaming menu" and set the
phone to roaming mode. It will ignore the sprint signal even if I am right
next to a sprint tower. That is why sprint is so cool. If I don't like the
sprint signal I can force roaming. No other cell phone service provider
allows you to do that. You certainly can't do it with Verizon and I know
that the GSM providers don't offer that option wither.

Can you please pass me a glass of T-Mo Kool-aid and a pack of Splenda? You
know, the yellow package that tastes like sugar. :-)

Yup, that is my case and point. But Sprint users can just go into the menu
and set their phone to permanent roaming if they want. I do it everywhile
just for the fun of it, but usually go back to using the native sprint
service because it is better here in southern california.

It could be any number of things:

    1. The Sprint tower is nearer to your house.
    2. The Verizon phone you had was not one that was good for reception.
    3. The Verizon phone was not using an update PRL that gave you ability to
connect to the tower in your area.

At any rate, I stand by my claim....Verizon is *FAR* better than Sprint, in
network and customer service and support.
