I use my V3m in "Phone As Modem" EVDO Rev 0 mode regularly with no
complaints. The speed varies depending on a variety of factors, from
signal strength to how busy the tower is, but it's generally quite
usable. Roaming on Alltel towers is also usually pretty fast, but
Verizon only allows the slower 1xRTT mode for roaming, which is still
usable for most things, but only about double dial-up speeds. I don't
know what will happen to the Alltel roaming agreements when the Verizon
    takeover is completed.

If I were using it more than I do, I'd go to a separate EVDO Rev 1 data
card, but my existing unlimited data plan and phone work well enough for
my current needs. The new data plan has a 5GB/mo limit, I believe.

The limit goes along with what I'd heard--that Verizon has imposed a
5GB/limit on it's "unlimited" accounts. That's why I'll ONLY consider
    Sprint and AT&T.

    Thanks for the reply.

Both Sprint and AT&T also impose 5GB limits on data cards and tethering.
The difference is Verizon's is a "hard limit" (they charge per MB over 5GB)
whereas Sprint and AT&T use "soft limits"- they warn you if you exceed the
5GB limit and threaten to cancel your service if you're a repeat offender,
but they don't bill you extra.

Of the national carriers, only T-Mo offers unlimited data on PC cards, but
with their current slow 2G data network (~200kbps), it's unlikely you'd
have time to exceed 5GB in only 30 days! ;-)

Right... My Sprint PAM data option is still showing as "Unlimited", but
I don't know if that'll hold up through a contract renewal.

There was no mention in my May bill, and my current bill lists:

Sprint PowerVision Unlimited & PAM Plan -
Sprint PowerVision Unlimited& Phone As Modem Plan $39.99

    My online usage shows this:

You might want to take a look at this very long thread on Howard Forums:
    http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php?t=1371662

or this chat with the Sprint "Director of Customer Experience", Tony
    Jackson:

    http://www.buzzaboutwireless.com/cms/index.php?
    option=com_moderatedchat&chatid=16

Here's a snippet from the latter cite:

    " asked: What 5gb T & C? Mine say unlimited

Tony Jackson : A new 5GB cap for connection cards and phone as modem was
communicated in mid July -- superceding prior plan wording and terms /
conditions... Now consistent with our competitors.

redhatnick asked: Just to clarify as well, there is no such thing as
being grandfathered in where the unlimited would still apply after the
    June notification?

Tony Jackson : That is correct... no grandfathering "

The 5gb limit is imposed on connection cards, not on PAM options, no?
