It's that time again--end of the contract. Since Sprint is just about
the only action in town out here in the wilds of Northern Misery, guess
    I'll be staying with them.

A CS rep told me both of my lines are eligible for $150 credit each for
a new phone. So, folks, what do you recommend for my needs?

Oh, they are very simple: I just want a PHONE that makes and receives
calls reliably in the most fringe of areas--in other words, STRONG
SIGNAL and RECEPTION! No MP3, NO camera, NO walkie-talkie, NO web
access (DSL, laptop with wi-fi, and Panera Bread work very well for
that!), NO Qwerty keyboard, NO PDA. Bluetooth and GPS capabilities are
pluses, but NO deal breaker. I realize no such animal probably exists,
but what do you think is the strongest phone, within the constraints of
    the freebies I can get?

Oh, an aside to DGI: the RL 4920's have worked admirably, but they are
getting long in tooth, and weak in the ears. Gotta move onward and upward!

    Many thanks for your help.

Glad they could offer interim help. The last time I looked at
the Sprint line there was at least one Katana that ranked extremely
highly on every front. It had features you don't need, but the price
was reasonable enough (esp. with your credit) that you could just
    ignore them.

I don't know how things are up north, but I was in KC a short
while ago and my experience was the exact opposite of misery. Couldn't
have been cooler. Oh, and my Sprint phones at the time worked like a
    charm.

I have 5 phones on my account... All Sanyo... 4/5 are Katana models....
    Reception is GREAT.

Now the caveat: They are all models before Sanyo sold off the phone line. I
have NO experience positive or negative with phones under the new regime.

When I migrated to Sanyo phones a few years back, I LOVED the call
'coverage', and the excellent performance in low signal areas compared to
    the other brands...

    David,

Good to hear from you. Yes, the 4920's have done very well; but, seems
that some of the newer phones do a bit better. Relatives who have
Sprint come visit us, and they can use their phones anywhere in our
house. WE have to go to a particular spot or two, stand very still, and
maybe with one foot in the air, and PRAY that the call doesn't drop!

Anyway, appreciate the suggestion. Will check out the Katana phones.
Probably wind up going to the Sprint store to get hands (and eyes) on
    experience.

Oh, and by "cool" I mean COLD!!! I'm a warm weather guy; spent 30 years
in Phoenix. This MO climate definitely is the pits. That's why I call
it Misery! And, yes, Sprint works very well in KC and along the major
highways. However, Rte 36, across the Northern part of the state,
presents very spotty service, UNTIL one gets to I35, just North of KC.

    Best regards,

    Jim

Katana LX is a great base phone. Battery lasts a very long time.
My wife is very fond of hers & she went through quite a few models.

Thanks to all for your suggestions. Will follow through and post
results IF we get new phones!
