I know this is probably a dumb question, but does Sprint have coverage in
Yosemite? I would be outraged if there are cell towers in Yosemite. But at
the same time, I'm hoping to get coverage while I'm there.

No Sprint coverage. There are a couple of analog towers in or near the
park that you can roam on.

    Roy,
Are you equally outraged at the proliferation of utility poles, high
tension power lines, telephone lines, signposts, trash containers,
street lamp standards, etc. throughout certain areas of Yosemite (as
well as EVERYWHERE else in the civilized world)?

I simply don't understand your sense of outrage, given the fact that
you, like many other NIMBYs, want wireless coverage, but won't accept
the necessary infrastructure. The signals don't beam down from Mars!

    Perhaps I'm missing something.

    Cordially,

    The rest of us

I'm not a NIMBY. I don't have a problem with it in the backyard.

But I have a SERIOUS problem with overdevelopment in national parks and
    preserved areas.

Sure I'd like to have coverage in Yosemite, but I'd much rather not have the
coverage if it means keeping development down.

I've never been to Yosemite, so let me ask this, do they have any places
where you can get Internet access there? Like a business center or anything
    like that?

I know, you probably think I'm smoking crack but I've got a major project
that needs to be ready on Monday so I'd like to check in every once in a
    while...

In the alternative, anyone know the Website/company with the best prepaid
    calling card rates?

A few years ago my SPCS phone roamed (at extra cost) on a strong analog
signal in Yosemite Valley. I think the provider was ATTWS.

Sprint has native coverage in Oakhurst on Hwy 41 south of the park.

For more on the subject go to Google Groups Advanced search, and search
for Yosemite in alt.cellular* over the past year.

Hehe... well if that's the case, then it's people like you who quite
frankly, don't deserve a cell phone. It's utterly moronic to be
outraged if cell sites are erected, yet expect to have coverage.

Internet access = wireless antrennas or the trenching of lines to
support internet connections = development activity and sigificant
ripping up of the ground. So I imagine if they did offer internet
access, you'd be very upset at what had to happen to make it so.

You are the moron because you need to learn how to read.

Where did I say I EX{ECTED to have coverage? I did not expect to have
coverage, in fact, I said that I was probably asking dumb question because I
expected NOT to have coverage. But if there was coverage, I wanted to know
about it. I'd hate to lug my laptop up to the woods for nothing. That's the
point of having a newsgroup you know, to ask questions that other people
    might know the answer to.

Idiots like you who don't know how to read don't deserve a cell phone.

    Sheesh.

No, I think it is you who needs to learn. I didn't call you a moron. I
said it would be moronic to expect coverage while at the same time
complaining about developmend. But since you're backpedaling on your
expectations, then I guess you don't qualify as a moron then, do you?

You don't need to get defensive. Unless of course, you know for a fact
    that your position is faulty.

    {snip}

Why would you lug your laptop into the woods for *anything*? For
someone so dedicated to preserving the natural beauty of our national
monuments, you sure seem reluctant to give up the amenities of a
developed area, if only for a few days.

    > That's the
    > point of having a newsgroup you know, to ask questions that other people

Looks like you answered your own question. If you don't expect
coverage, then don't bring your laptop and cell phone. If the coverage
is there and you'd be angry about it, then why demonstrate the need for
that coverage by using your cell phone as a data connection while there?
You're tearing down your own case against development in Yosemite.

    > Idiots like you who don't know how to read don't deserve a cell phone.

So then, you agree that you don't deserve a cell phone?

    Re: SPCS coverage in Yosemite?

Sprint coverage exists in Oakhurst and stops about a mile out as you go
up the mountain toward Yosemite. You may find a spot here or there in
Fish Camp (I have a cabin there so I know the spots of reception pretty
well). You can pull in to the Tenaya Lodge parking lot and get rf but
outside of that, no way unless you use the sole provider of analog
coverage in the valley which is Mountain Wireless or something like
    that.
