I heard a commercial for Verizon PTT today...

It was on KQRS in Minneapolis. Looks like they are beating Sprint to it.
Is Verizon rolling it out slowly or nation wide??

I wonder if a Nextel phone would be able to connect to a Verizon PTT?

This would be good if all services were compatible (Sprint <--if ever,
Nextel DC and Verizon PTT).

There was an article on CNNmoney about this
(http://money.cnn.com/2003/08/18/tech...lweg/index.htm).
Sprint will launch their version late this year as well (the article
states).

But unlike Nextel's PTT which uses a separate, dedicated radio frequency,
Verizon and Sprint will use the same cell protocol as the phone service uses
- meaning connect times for the PTT will take just as long as a regular
phone call.

They cannot... since most carriers are trying to follow suit and from
everything I've read, Sprint PCS wanted to launch their PTT system the
same time VZW did... or earlier for that matter... and Cingular and
ATTWS are pursuing GPRS PTT systems... their has been press that has
suggested the govt should intervene to make the carriers have
intercompatible PTT networks since right now, whoever has PTT will only
be able to communicate using PTT on other phones on the same network
with PTT... so Nextel with Nextel, VZW with VZW, etc...

Its effectively 20.00 extra on top of their America's Choice plan, so it
starts at

59.99 per month for 400 peak unlimited N&W anywhere on their network or
their extended network as well as 1000 MTM minutes for calling any other
VZW customers in a regular voice call and unlimited PTT nationwide
within VZW's footprint...

Err, no. Verizon (and Sprint) uses 1xRTT data for PTT, and VoIP-type
protocol on the wires.

That Sucks!!
This is going to turn out just like intercarrier text messaging.
Customers are going to have to complain, fight and struggle with the
seperate standards. It could turn out two ways. Linking the different
PTT systmes is not impossible. There will always be some technology that
will bridge the gap between incompatible standards. If consumers push
hard enough, carriers will allow intercarrier PTT messaging. But I see
it in the end that the carriers will keep their PTT systems locked
within their own networks. It would allow them to grow their customer
base because new customers who would want to communicate with those who
already have their service , has to get their phones (just like nextel!)

Phone companies can easily make their PTT technology compatible with
other carriers....it's really a matter of money.

If Sprint and VZW make their PTT compatible with Nextel right from the
beginning, then what would be the point of Nextel subscribers switching
to Sprint or VZW (which is their ultimate goal)?

No carrier offers true nationwide coverage in all 50 states. Verizon offers
service in some areas where Sprint doesn't, Sprint offers service in some
areas where Verizon doesn't, and there are a few spots where neither offer
service.

Sprint's "nationwide" network covers the major cities. So does Verizon's.

I saw the commercial for the first time during the LLWS last night (GO
SAUGUS!!!!), and I found it funny that the delay between the beep and
the "Can you hear me now?" was less than a second. Weird, since I've
heard of about a 2 second delay, maybe even more in reality......
