Does anyone know why samsung A500 was discontinued? It seems like the
smallest, sleekest phone that sprint has. Why is it going away? It's
replacement the A600 is much bulkier and not everyone needs the
camera.

Re: why samsung A500 discontinued
I believe they are bring out a new phone to replace it called the A660.
This will be very similar to the A500 and maybe even a bit smaller. No
camera either.

I was wondering the same thing myself. I looked at an A600. It's bigger
and bulkier (and less elegant) than the A500.

All good things must come to an end, and just because something comes
out after, with a higher number, doesn't mean its better, or a
replacement (HP was notorious with this and their printers)...

Re: why samsung A500 discontinued
This is a very nice looking phone - I can't tell if it has an external
display though.
I like the fact I won't be limited to 30 voice dials. I wonder if it will
have a field for physical addresses along with e-mail addresses.

And still is. Many times the new model was really unchanged (i.e. 740
instead of 730) and was only to prevent folks with a defective printer
from going to Walmart, buying a new printer, waiting a week, and putting
old printer in box and returning it as bad for a refund.
PackardBell used to have different model numbers for different stores
(i.e. 924 or 926) so the storre could advertise to guarantee it had the
lowest price. Of course it did, it was the only chain selling that model
number. This is a variation of what Sealy Mattress started after World
War II. Different ticking on the same mattress for different chains, so
each could guarantee a lowest price, as no one else had the same model.

A friend and I just purchased A500's, while I was in the store getting
some work done to it, I was chatting with one of the salesgirls. She
was telling me that A500 is the last of the Sprint phones that can be
used as a modem through the USB port of a computer. All new phones do
not have this capability anymore. That could be a possibility, the
other I would think, is that it doesn't have a built in camera.

I have a hard time believing it ... unless Bluetooth will take over that
function ...

Well, considering some of the things that sales reps have said in the
past, I'm not sure I believe it either, but she seemed sincere.
Doesn't really matter to me much anyway as it sounds like Sprint is
starting to be pretty picky about that function.

Actually, no, its replacement is the VGA1000. And I've seen both: they
have similar form factors to the A500.

Not even CLOSE to being true. The Sanyo 8100 came after the A500, and
it can be used as a modem (and is also still a current model).

Not only that, I'm sure it won't be long, even if no company agrees to
it, some hackers will find a cable for it and make software so thet can
use it as a modem.
