I just recently purchased a Sanyo 8100 phone and activated my Sprint service
on it (along with everyone else I know). Recently while talking to my boss
at work, he stated that he had heard that the little speaker on the back
of the phone eventually will be used for a walkie-talkie type feature similar
to what Nextel offers on their phones. Has anyone else heard this other
than me and my boss, and is there any truth to it??? Just curious. Thanks
in advance for the reply.

That speaker in back has always been my ringer and other sounds my phone
makes.
where would the walkie talkie button be?

A few months ago I saw 2 prototypes. The sanyo 7200 rugged phone,
lookes great. The other phone I saw was a version of the 5300 w/out the
camera, not the 8100. I actually saw 4 different models the only diff
in 3 of them where the keys. The other one was a rugged 5300 just like
the 7200.

Re: Sanyo 8100 - Walkie-Talkie Feature?
When you first heard that did it not make you THINK how that could be
possible if there is no BUTTON to push to use as a walkie-talkie ?

That wouldn't be a problem. If the software is upgraded, you could go
into "Ready Link mode" by selecting an option in the menu and then the
camera button could act as the PTT button. Supposedly, with a software
update, you can enter ##DATA and get to a menu for Ready Link. That
would imply that they at least had some forethought of PTT when the
phone was released.
The only question is whether it's simply a software matter of making a
phone Ready Link compatable or if it's missing hardware. Even if it's
just a software issue, I doubt Sprint would let people upgrade because
they can sell more phones and lock people into a new contract if they
don't.
About the speaker, as fas as I know, there is no hidden speakerphone in
the 8100. But you don't NEED it. Any of the Nextel Motorolas can use
Direct Connect in a private mode and not use the speakerphone. So if
the 8100 could be flashed to use Ready Link, then you could use it
without a speaker at all.

I read somewhere the PTT will not be PTT. It will be full duplex as to
not need a PTT button.

Sorry, its all they could do to shoehorn the camera in there. Don't
hold your breath waiting for the 8100 to us PTT, as a matter of fact,
dont even hold your breath waiting for PTT.

And what would that do for you that a normal speaker phone currently
doesn't???

Re: Re: Sanyo 8100 - Walkie-Talkie Feature?
Interesting post, I have read here in the past few weeks, that Sprint
has lost money on virtually every phone it has sold recently, even at
full asking prices, before rebates and etc. ( it must be true if it is
posted here, right?) But if this were anywhere near true, it would
support the software update theory--it would also somewhat explain, why
it seem so difficult to get sprint to give a current customers a
discount on a phone upgrade.

Re: Re: Sanyo 8100 - Walkie-Talkie Feature?
Only Brandt has the audacity to claim that Sprint loses money on every phone.
He may be confusing the price a store is "charged" for a phone by Sprint, with
the net cost Sprint pays a manufacturer.
Brandt even claimed that at $600 Sprint is losing money on the Treo 600, which
of course is why it has a $150 discount on day one of being sold.
=============================
I don't work for Sprint
I can be honest.
