It seems like everyone loves the 8100. I was wondering if anyone else
had opinions on either of the two new Samsung phones.
Thanks in advance.

Re: Sanyo 8100 vs Samsung a600 vs Samsung vga1000
Well between the two samsungs I'd go with the VGA1000 (A620). Talking
with the Sprint techs they said the screen on the a620 is the same or
better and the polyphonic ringers are better. When I asked why the a600
cost so much they simply said it's the rotating screen. So I bought the
620. I'm loving it. My brother has the 8100. It's a good phone as
well. I'd play around with both at the store and see which you like
better. Personally I like the 620 the best out of the 3. The menus on
the 620 are better than the 8100, the camera has zoom features and a
flash too.

Re: Sanyo 8100 vs Samsung a600 vs Samsung vga1000
Thanks. I've been doing some more research (just found out the 1000 is
the 620) and I think I'm leaning towards the 620 or 8100. I don't think
the extra money is worth it for a rotating (although cool) screen.
Thanks again.

Re: Sanyo 8100 vs Samsung a600 vs Samsung vga1000
Just to set things straight, the A600 screen is brighter than the A620.
The A600 also has a better camera than the A620. A600 keypad is blue,
A620 keypad is green.

I guess the biggest question here is if you want a PHONE/toy hybrid or a
TOY/phone hybrid. The 600 and 620 both have nicer displays, and better
cameras then the 8100, but i am telling you nobody builds a phone like
sanyo for sprints network. the 8100 is heads and shoulders above both
the 600 and 620 reception-wise and i'll tell you what its like having a
totally different cell provider with a sanyo on sprint versus any
samsung. if you live in an extremely good coverage area, try the
samsungs, if you ever get into anything but a full signal area, the
sanyos call quality and reception performance make it the phone for me.

Re: Sanyo 8100 vs Samsung a600 vs Samsung vga1000
That's a good point. I had (was stolen) a Samsung 8500 in Chicago and
was dropping calls like crazy. I assumed Samsung had fixed the
problems.
If anyone lives in Chicago, I'd love to hear their thoughts on these
three phones.
I guess I'd rather have a good phone first and worry about the camera
later.
Thanks.

Re: Sanyo 8100 vs Samsung a600 vs Samsung vga1000
I've had all three phones and I noticed no significant difference in
reception among them. The A620 and A600 have a much faster browser than
the 8100. All three are great phones. Samsung has really worked on the
reception issue (IMHO). I liked the Sanyo 8100 but, with the exception
of the 4900, I think a lot of the Sanyo reception claims are overblown
(my bars are bigger than your bars, blah blah blah).

Re: Sanyo 8100 vs Samsung a600 vs Samsung vga1000
Rob Smith is right on the money. The Sanyo 8100 has superior signal
strength in comparison to the Samsung A600 and A620. A good test is
around fringe areas such as Athens GA. After playing with all of them,
Sanyo works while others fade and drop calls.

I'm not so sure about that last part, although there does seem to be a bit
of truth to it. In the call center, the Sanyos consistently report a higher
signal strength than the Samsungs. Even the new ones. Although they seem
to actually hold the signal just as well. We don't make voice calls on
them, though, so I can't tell you anything about sound quality on them,
except during games, ringers, etc.

Re: Sanyo 8100 vs Samsung a600 vs Samsung vga1000
I have (2) 8100's and (1) A620 and when in debug mode the difference
between them is negligible. The Sanyos report the same up to mabe 2-3
db more of reception than the Samsung. I have used them extensively
about my area and find that they both hold signal equally well and have
seen no noticable difference (except for the 2-3 db in the Debug menu,
the true reading of the signal being received by the phone). I love
and would choose the A620 over the 8100 (hard thing to say as I am a
die hard Sanyo fan) if I had it to do over again, bugs and all. I
really like the 8100 and have no problems with it, but prefer the A620
and say try for yourself and see which you prefer. I actually chose to
keep this phone, bugs and all, as it is that good and hope that
upgrades will fix some of the problems (I don't have all of them, just
some of them). Good luck in your choice, and remember in the end it is
just what makes you happy. If more bars makes you feel better than go
with the Sanyo, but I can't really find any difference in the reception
on mine.

Agreed. I tried Samsung AGAIN this weekend and purchased a VGA1000.
Guess what? The phone was crap.
I honestly don't see how people are giving the VGA1000 good reviews. I
extended the "antenna" only to find that it bent VERY easily and was
incredibly flimsy, and jusdging from the construction (if you take off
the battery, it looks like the antenna was constructed from cheap
plastic Bic pen parts) it probably serves no useful purpose. Earpiece
sound quality was horrible. And the interface, I suppose, was okay, but
flashy enough to be nauseating at times. Though it is nice to know that
if I had dropped and scratched up that phone, a can of silver Krylon
spraypaint will fix it right up, seeing as that's how this phone was
probably painted to begin with.
It's a shame, too, since the VGA1000 seems to have a better camera than
the 8100. But the extreme flimsiness and (of course) poor signal
holding ability clinched it for me. I returned this phone without even
activating it... all I did was call *2 and noticed the audio was
horrible and that was the last straw.
Sprint *really* needs to find a better supplier to replace Samsung.

Re: Sanyo 8100 vs Samsung a600 vs Samsung vga1000
i have the a620 and love it. haven't had any problems with it at all. i
think the antenna is like that so that it won't bend or break easily. i
don't think it's that way because it's cheap. and the bottom part of
the antenna you can see with the battery off looks just like all my
other sanyos. plastic sheath housing a metal piece.
and i wouldn't call the phone flimsy at all. it has a nice, large metal
piece in the center (it's metal - very cool to the touch compared to
the plastic around it). and the flip on mine seems very sturdy. it's a
heavy phone. but small.
the camera works as good as any vga camera. the phone has a zillion
features and MUCH cooler menus than my 8100 (which i also loved). and
the reception i found to be fantastic. as good as my 8100 was. it is
true that it shows less bars most of the time but it holds a signal
equally good if not better in low signal areas than my 8100 did. the
8100 seemed to be stuck on 4 bars most of the time, until i got into a
low signal area - then it would bounce around like crazy. the a620 just
stays on one or two bars in the same spots and doesn't budge.
i have experienced very few bugs. and i upload and download all day
long and play with the settings and features and play games and take
pics. i never have any problems. and the battery life is good.
so, for those of you who are looking into this phone, i just wanted to
add a good review. and a sincere one. i was a die-hard sanyo person and
decided to try a samsung for the hell of it when i got tired of the
poor 8100 image quality, and because i heard the reception had finally
improved on the new samsungs. i have been very happy so far.
but different areas of the country may result in different RF results,
and i can see someone thinking the phone is a POS because i have heard
people say totally opposite things about every single phone. a lot of
it is clearly subjective. i was at first worried this phone would be
too flimsy or not put together well. but i don't have any concerns
about that anymore.

Re: Sanyo 8100 vs Samsung a600 vs Samsung vga1000
I've used both the 8100 and the A620. Liked them both, very much.
Chose to keep the A620. No regrets so far.

3 db is equal to 100% in RF reception. That 3 db can either hold or
lose a signal in a weak area. 3 means a lot in RF, and is not
negligible. The higher the RF reports the weaker the signal is, so
higher does not mean better.

Re: Sanyo 8100 vs Samsung a600 vs Samsung vga1000
This is true except in actual RF output measurement. I am an engineer/RF
technician by trade and deal with this everyday as my company makes RF
power amplifiers for cell phones. This difference is negligible as the
atmospheric conditions can affect the output reading by as much as 10
db +/-. I am also a liscenced HAM and love to deal with this for a
hobby. When you are talking antenna gain then this is an entirely
different equation and you are right in the difference between holding
a strong signal and losing complete comm. The input signal on the
other hand is completely different especially when talking about a
strong signal already being held (then 2-3 db) is quite negigible, And
for all intense purposes what we are dealing with here is completely
negigible (now when we are in the -100 range, yes this can make a
difference), but my phones generally stay in the -60 range (lucky me as
I have a decent area).
