I bought an OEM Samsung data cable, and want to use it to get e-mail
on my Samsung 3500 with an Ibm Thinkpad 600X running XP Pro. I
created a modem using the standard 19200 driver, (after having tried
the standard 33000 driver, connect everything, but when I instruct the
computer to dial the modem, it can't. This is supposed to work, so is
there something I could be missing or not trying?

This website has info about using a Samsung 8500 as a modem. Maybe
you'll find something useful on it, if you haven't already:

Dean, I hate to ask a simplistic question as this, but did you put your 3500
in data mode, when trying to connect? (Menu 9 - 1)

Re: using Samsung 3500 as a modem

You DO NOT have to put the Samsung 3500 into a data mode. It will
automatically switch to the data mode when you dial out. I have a
very similar setup - Samsung 3500, OEM Samsung data cable and an IBM
ThinkPad 240 running XP Pro. I'm using the standard 19200 bps modem
driver and it works fine. Now there are sometimes where it will not
work. It's almost like the phone locks up or something. Voice will
still work, but data will stop working. When this happens you have to
turn the phone off and then turn it back on. I would try that first.
Also, make sure something else is not using the same port. When I use
Com1 serial port, I sometimes forget to disable the PalmPilot Hotsync
program which also uses Com1. I only have the one serial port and
it's easy to forget about other programs trying to use the same port.
Also, I've hooked the cable to a USB to Serial converter and it also
works with the 19200 modem driver. Just make sure you set the
converter to 19,200 or higher. When I first installed the driver for
the converter, it defaulted to 9,600 and it won't work. Is the 3500
being hooked to a serial or USB port? It really doesn't matter since
both will work as long as the speed is set correctly.

Also, just to mention if you try to use the fax program that is built
into XP with the 3500 - it won't work. I didn't spend a lot of time
with it, but Microsoft in their stupidity doesn't allow the correct
init strings to go to the phone. They want to try to put the phone
into a data mode instead of a fax mode and there doesn't seem to be a
way to override it even if you put in what you want the init string to
be. WinFax Pro or an older version of WinFax Lite takes care of
sending the correct init strings to the phone to allow sending a fax
with the Samsung 3500. Now if you want to receive a fax, you do have
to put the phone in a fax mode by using Menu-9-1.
