I got a look at a Samsung SPH-i500 at my local Sprint dealer. I beamed a
copy of Quartus Benchmark 2.0 to the i500.

The 66Mhz Dragonball seems pretty fast. It clocked out at 283%. 100% is
    Palm IIIe.

How does that compare with other smartphones?

I'm assuming that will work on my Treo which has a Dragonball 33. How
    can I get a copy?

I'm gonna try it. If it works for me, it'll PROBABLY work for you i500
guys. One warning though, overclocking software tends to dramatically
reduce battery life. It might not be worth it.

I'll give it a shot tonight or tomorrow morning and report back what I
    find.

Here's some more info on it in case anybody's curious how it works:

There are probably newer ones, but here's a source:

Well, my lowly 33 mhz chip clocks in at an AMAZING 164% compared to the
    66 mhz chip's 283%. Oh well, I'll have my Treo 600 soon.

I tried Cruise Control and it did absolutely NOTHING! Once I activated
it, nothing seemed quicker. Then I ran the benchmark again and it was
still at 164%. It's probably because it's not deisgned for my CPU.
The website says it's for the Dragonbal EZ. The Treo has a Dragonball
VZ, a newer model. It's possible a newer overclocking program could
have better luck. Since the i500 has an even newer chip I doubt it'll
    for that either. Oh well...

I'm not as ecstatic as most here seem to be about the Treo 600. If I have
to pay big bucks for a smartphone, I require a flip phone to protect my
screen. The 600 drops the flip cover that to 200-300 series had. I very
    bad idea in my opinion.

I don't mind not having a flip. I very rarely carry my Treo 300
without its case. I don't plan on changing that with the 600. I don't
go fo one of the plastic holsters that leave it completely vulnerable,
have a pouch that offers protection. I'd rather not be able to show my
phone off while it's on my hip but keep it well protected. If I do
this for the 600, things shouldn't be any different.

I haven't had any experience yet where I wish my i5 performed better &
I've got all kinds of games/apps. So I'm not really sure where the
    benefit would come in.

I can't really say anything that hasn't already been said. The Treo
600 has double the RAM, a SDIO slot so you can add more memory, as well
as a GPS unit, FM radio, a SD bluetooth card for OS 5 is being
deveoped... There's also MP3 support, a camera, speakerphone,
downloadable ringtones, caller ID (since there's no external LCD or
OLED for the i500). Then there's the QWERTY keyboard. I understand
that some people might not need all that. But it looks like the Treo
600 will be about the same price as the i500, maybe even cheaper. That
being the case, the i500 looks extremely outdated, obselete, and
overpriced. Would you pay $50,000 for a 2000 Toyota Camry if you could
    get a 2004 Mercedes S Slass for the same price? I wouldn't.

My statement wasn't about comparing the Treo 600 to the I500. It was a
comment about the I500 and how I haven't seen an impact on performance
based on it's design. I'm having difficulty filling up more than 50% of
it's memory and it seems to zip along just fine. And you're right, all
that crap about what's missing on the I500, has been posted hear and in
about 200 other threads, so it really isn't worth repeating. Reading
your laundry list of what's missing isn't anything most people don't
know by now. You're also bragging about a product (Treo 600) that
hasn't even hit the shelves. So the car comparison doesn't make a lot
    of sense.

I was just trying to show how while the i500 will more than adequate
for many people, it's considerably overpriced. For what it has, it's
shouldn't be more than $400. The comparison wasn't meant to say, "look
what the Treo can do, the i500 sucks because it can't do as much." It
was meant to show that if the Treo 600 can do all that at the same
price (or cheaper) as the i500, then the price is way too high.

I know the Treo 600 isn't out yet, but many 2004 cars aren't out yet
either. To make the care analogy more relevant, if you could get a
2003 Camry now or wait a couple months for the 2004 Mercedes at the
same price, what would you do? Just about anyone would say that while
the Camry might be all they need, why should they have to pay as much
    as a Mercedes costs?

Anyone have an idea of the relative speed of the 600? The camera is the
only thing that I would miss in the i500. As far as your analogy goes,
there ARE new versions of cars that are worse than the older versions. The
insurance on a MB is a factor also I would feel a lot worse if my MB got
    keyed than a Camry

The i500 might be compared to Mini Cooper S. Small, lightweight, and fast
    without the frills.

I find the i500 is the only smartphone I've seen that is compact. A major
    item for me.

For people that demand a phone be that small, then i500 is the obvious
choice. I'm just saying it should be cheaper.

As far as the relative speed goes, it's hard to say. The i500 has a
Dragonball 66 mhz and the Treo 600 has an ARM 144 mhz. The speed in
mhz is meaningless because they're two completely different types of
CPUs. Once the Treo is released, someone can use the benchmark
software that you talked about to start this thread (wow, actually back
on topic here!) to find out. You said the i500 shows 283% on that
application. So we'll see how the Treo 600 does.
