Hello everyone. I recently purchased a samsung i500. Although I feel the
phone is very overpriced, I love it nevertheless. I'm beyond the 14 day
return period and now that I'm used to the phone, I want to start to
customize it by adding ringtones and pics etc. I'm also interested in hacks,
    etc.

When I was using a samsung n400, i got a lot of ringtones etc at 3GUpLoad,
but they dont support my i500.

Anyone out there with any tips on how to get some cool stuff for my phone?

    David

    David,

My understanding is that the I500 does not allow downloaded ringtones. Can
    someone confirm?

Basically, correct. Technically, it's simply that the I500 doesn't support
J2ME. If someone were to make a Palm app that enabled such support, and
knew how to interact with the phone side of the device, then yeah, it could
    work.

Ok. That sucks. I still love the phone but now feel like its even more
overpriced! By J2ME you mean java? What does J2ME stand for exactly?

Thanks for telling me all this; I'll quit trying to load ringtones!

But wait... I've found a few "pay" sites that are for the i500....

Samsunf left out downloadable ringtone support for the i500 just like
they did for the i330. J2ME (Java 2 Micro Edition) isn't needed
though. Ringtone managers have been developed for the Treo line which
doesn't have J2ME support either. Midi files can be converted to .pdb
(Palm database files). Then, with the aid of a ringtone manager, the
new ringtones can be used. I'm surprised this wasn't explored with the
i330 if it was possible. It's possible that the i330 and i500 aren't
capable of this at all, which would really suck.

I'm not sure what these "pay" sites offer, but unless they've found a
way to get ringtones on the i500, which I doubt, then they have nothing
    to offer.

Maybe I'm too old, but ringtones don't do anything for me.

You're right. You must be too old; either chronologically or at heart.

Especially with Sprint, I was happy that the phone rang, period.

Yup, Java. As others have mentioned, workarounds are being developed,
but J2ME (Java 2 Mobile/Micro Edition) is the method we use at SPCS.
