I've trolled around though various newsgroups and sprint seems to have many
less posts than say verizon's newsgroup. can anyone tell me the relative
number of customers each major cellular provider has (ie sprint vs at&t vs
verizon etc.)?

The two have nothing related to each other, i.e.: the number of subscribers
to the number posts on a certain newsgroup. In saying that, you can visit
each provider's site and find out through the most recent quarterly reports
on the number of subscribers per carrier.

HI wonder how many of those customers that Verizon and Cingular have
came from mergers and acquistions?

A huge percentage, considering the fact that mergers created both
companies.

Technically, all of them, since neither Verizon nor Cingular existed as
an entity prior to the merger. Both were a "merger of equals" and a new
company was created for each after the mergers.

Not totally off, but not right on either. Here's the actual numbers:
wireless carriers 03/03 06/03 09/03 12/03
================= ------------------------------
1. Verizon Wireless VZ/VOD 33.324 34.619
2. Cingular Wireless BLS/SBC 22.114 22.640
3. AT&T Wireless Services AWE 21.142 21.493
4. Sprint PCS PCS 14.959
5. Nextel Communications NXTL/NXTP 11.09M
6. T-Mobile DT
7. ALLTEL AT 7.761
8. U.S. Cellular USM 4.240
Yes, I know I need to update T-Mobile. They're right around 10 Million.

Re: numbers of customers
Ok, let's try that one more time with (hopefully) better formatting
and updated numbers:
wireless carriers 03/03 06/03

1. Verizon Wireless VZ/VOD 33.324 34.619
2. Cingular Wireless BLS/SBC 22.114 22.640
3. AT&T Wireless Services AWE 21.142 21.493
4. Sprint PCS PCS 18.243 18.8 M
direct 14.959 15.29M
resale .590
affiliate 2.694
5. Nextel Communications NXTL/NXTP 11.092 11.683
6. T-Mobile DT 10.837 11.443
7. ALLTEL AT 7.761 7.872
8. U.S. Cellular USM 4.240 4.343
9. Dobson Cellular Systems DCEL 1.411 1.565
Dobson Communications 718.9k 867.6k

11.Rural Cellular Corporation RCCC 728.7k 739.0k
12.Centennial Wireless CYCL 538.9k 540.9k
If someone has the correct breakdown of SPCS's numbers for Q2 please
post them.

Re: numbers of customers
Well, that formatting still isn't rendering correctly. Next time, try
opening up a new notepad file, copy & paste your table there, add any tabs
to line it up correctly, and then copy & paste it in your post.
Or, dare I say, try posting an html post, as that should hold the formatting
in place ... if you are using Excel to store your data.

Re: numbers of customers
His formatting is good only for fixed-spacing fonts.
A majority of us read in proportional-spacing fonts.
There probably isn't any reliable solution to that problem.

It renders just fine----IF you go to View>Text Size>Fixed
Tables pretty much only work in a fixed type style.

It looks fine in the Google reader. And posting with Google doesn't
allow using HTML or proportional fonts. Take your own advice and copy
the data out of your news reader and paste it into Notepad and it
should look just fine.

Re: numbers of customers
This argument is based on a limited search. Try www.sprintusers.com and
you will see a rather large number of users who are happy campers.
Sprint, like AT&T, offers its own forum. http://forum.attws.com/attws
offers a very different set of issues and ideas than is found here.
Also try http://howardforums.com. A lot of what you see depends one who
learned about what web sites.
