How was your carrier during the blackout?

Here in the northern suburbs of Detroit:

    Verizon: Reliable
Sprint: Very poor or no service
Cingular: Very poor or no service (second hand account from reliable
    source).
    Nextel: No service
    AT&T: ???
    T-Mobile: ???

This was with some fairly extensive driving throughout Macomb County and
    reports from Oakland county.
    What were your experiences?

Mine was perfect on Verizon Wireless.. But I live in Northern Idaho.. So,
none of the switches in this area had anything to do with the NE!

    Northern NY (Ogdensburg, NY)

Verizon: worked after initial rush of calls (small number of channels for a
    rural area)
    Sprint: Doesn't service this area
Cingular: Don't know (didn't hear any complaints)
    Nextel: Doesn't service this area
    AT&T: Doesn't service this area
    T-Mobile: Doesn't service this area

I work in Garden City and have Verizon service. The phone would not
make or receive a call while I was at my office. I got down the road
to like Ford Rd and Merriman, and the signal was much better. I think
the tower near my work was having some real capacity issues. I was
really satisfied with my experience though. Where most people didn't
have any service (my younger brothers both have T-Mobile service and
couldn't catch a signal if their life depended on it) I didn't really
have any trouble making or receiving calls the whole weekend. That is
    just my observation though.

I don't think that I will ever leave Verizon. You do pay a
little bit of a premium when it comes to the price plans, but you
definitely get your money's worth. When you need to use the phone,
you are able to use it and don't have as many problems with coverage
    or anything.

Verizon: For the first hour or so, could not make or receive calls. Mobile
web did work during this time, which I used to check for updates from ABC
News. After the first hour or so was over, I could make and receive calls,
but could not access the voicemail system. After another hour or so,
    everything was working normally.

AT&T: Friends with AT&T could not make or receive calls for the rest of
Thursday. Service was still unavailable on Friday for much of the day.

Don't know about the other carriers.

Excellent. AMPS on the bagphone never missed a beat. Calls went
through faster without all those damned Yankees on the system,
    too!...(c;

Even Alltel on B was workin'!

Maybe we could get the power grid fixed if every politician
regulating the power companies wasn't on their payrolls.

Nassau County (Long Island), New York

T-Mobile worked great for about 5-6 hours.

At 4:20 pm, my brother could not contact my mom (Verizon Wireless) nor my
dad (AT&T Wireless) but he got through to me (T-Mobile) easily, from a
landline. Bro's Nextel phone was completely useless until the next day.
Not surprising... Nextel is pretty useless as a telephone most of the time
anyway (great for 2-way walkie-talkie though)

After about 6 hours, I guess the backup (battery?) power to the T-Mobile
towers went out, and I had no service.

By then Verizon & AT&T's congestion cleared up, and their cells still had
power. Diesel generators I guess. These two worked worked normally once
    the congestion had cleared.

T-Mobile came back online early Friday morning, but their mobile web
(T-Zones) has been slow the whole weekend.

    south-western connecticut...

I have cingular GSM and you could definitely tell that the system easily
became overloaded. I was not able to make a call out for quite awhile
although my luck at receiving calls was much higher. Couple people on
Tmobile called me - spose they didnt have as much trouble as i was having.

After about 4 or 5 hours the signal disappeared totally for any GSM network,
clearly their backup systems failed. As i drove home i passed through areas
that had coverage and others that were down. Gotta get generators!

Re: POLL: How was your service during the blackout?

ATTWS: Phone was able to detect a signal for several hours here in
Queens NY, but got the "system busy" tone and would try to re-dial.
By mid-evening, I got the "no service" display in the same location,
so I'm guessing that the cell in my area had some sort of back-up
emergency power that lasted a few hours before going completely dark,
or that ATTWS shut stuff down to protect their equipment/conserve
power during the restart. In any case, no call I tried to make to
anyone in the affected area or outside went through.

Re: POLL: How was your service during the blackout?

Didn't hear of any providers that worked except for Verizon. I have a
T-mobile phone and couldn't even connect a call until Late Friday
night (Downtown). Tmobile service in NYC has gone down considerably. I
will be switching to Verizon (unfortunately), but having a phone that
works in times like this is more important than any
    gadget/feature/mobility. Sorry T-mobile PEACE

I was at Detroit Metropolitan Airport. If Northwest had gotten my flight
out on time, I would have been on my way to Phoenix. I had both Sprint
(personal) and Verizon (work) phones. Both weren't that great. I did
actually have a little better luck getting a connection with Sprint. It
took a couple attempts, but I at least was able to get a call through.
Verizon had maybe 1 out of 5 connection rate, with one major drop while
trying to talking to corporate travel. At least Sprint didn't drop once
connected. Then again, with some 3-4,000 people in a small area and
probably half of them trying to call out, not a big surprise overall.

Verizon and Cingular were both reliable as was AT&T (roaming from Cingular)
in the Golden Triangle that didn't lose power
    (Brighton/Howell/Pinckney--Livingston Co.)
