You might want to do a search on the A620, AKA VGA1000. There have been
many threads disscussing this phone.

I feel that the flash is one of the few things the A620 / VGA-1000 have
above the Sanyo 8100.
But, I'm apprehensive when it comes to Samsung flip phones (although I'm
suprised that my wife's A500 is doing well!)

Re: Samsung VGA 1000 - need opinions....
It is almost as good a phone as the 8100 and has the better camera. It
is almost a must buy.

So is that a recommendation or not? Normally Sprint employees say
Sanyo phones are better at reception than Samsung phones.

No, other Sprint employees say that Sanyo phones get better reception.

Re: Samsung VGA 1000 - need opinions....
I like the A620 (VGA 1000) so much that I'm on my third one, having
returned the first two because of headset jack problems (incoming
sound was fine, outgoing broke up constantly). My third one has
another problem: with the answer option set to flip open, the phone
continues to ring for a second or two after the flip is opened. The
first time nearly blew my eardrum away, now I just pause a second
before putting the phone to my ear. I shouldn't have to do this, so
I'm taking it back to CostCo today for my fourth and final attempt to
find one that works as it should.
If #4 is faulty, I'm getting my money back and will reluctantly buy a
Sanyo 8100. I really love the A620, but it shouldn't be having these
issues.

Re: Samsung VGA 1000 - need opinions....
Well, I was introduced to the Sanyo 8100. Everyone I talked to said it
got the best reception and I can't deny it. But I learned that the
Samsung SPH A620 (VGA 1000) has the same strength in reception.
I exchanged the Sanyo 8100 for the Samsung A620 mainly because of
function, convenience, and camera.
Function: Better functions and more of it.
Convenience: More convenient menu, including customizable menus and
keys. Easier to use and manage address book, voice command, tools, etc.
Camera: Flash, digital zoom, higher definition pictures 640x480,
multiple pictures, easier to share.
Of course the internal and external LCD screens are better too. The only
thing I did not like better was the antenna, but the phone works find
without extending the attenna.
Conclusion: I believe this is the best $30 I've spent... With a new
account, the Sanyo was $100 and the Samsung is $130. Even at retail
prices of $200 to $260 would be a good investment.

Hopefully, you're not basing "the same strength in reception" on the
number of "bars." They're put there by the manufacturer of the phone.
One manufacturer might decide that a weak signal deserves one bar,
while the next thinks two would be more appropriate. Etc., etc. Not
only is there no standard between manufacturers, there's not even a
standard between different phone models from the *same* manufacturer.

Re: Samsung VGA 1000 - need opinions....
i have an 8100 and a VGA-1000. There oppinions are biased, "IN THE
PAST" sanyo phones got better reception, now they are equal. Besides,
the samsung has the newest chip set inside which gives the phone more
available power than old models. If there is a difference you won't
notice it unless you get a defective phone!

Re: Samsung VGA 1000 - need opinions....
My A620 works well. It holds onto signals in fringe areas than my old
Sanyo 4500 and I hardly ever get a dropped call. My only complaint is
the battery life... I have to charge it at least every other day, and
that is with moderate use. Is anyone else experiencing this problem?
I hope my free extended life battery comes soon from Costco!

Re: Samsung VGA 1000 - need opinions....
Thanks Larry... for pointing that out. I didn't go into detail about
that because I didn't want to make my post too long. But as Larry
pointed out, the bars on the phones means nothing! I stop depending on
those bars along time ago. Through the years of using different mobile
phones, I learned the same thing. The bars and scales on mobile phones
don't accurately tell you the strength of the signals you're getting on
your phones. In fact, I don't think that they are even consistent on one
single phone. For example, I have a Nokia 8890 which showed 1 bar at
some places and I talked a long time without one second of skipping.
Then there were times when I had 3 bar and I had to redial my party a
number of times because of drop calls and lots of skipping. I've even
experience so many time with many other phones where I got no bars and
smooth sailing all the way. So, my advice is ignore the bars and just
talk. And of course, I only compare signal quality with actual usage of
the phone and see if it skips or drop calls. I do use the bars as a hint
to where the signal of the phone could be bad.
I'm carrying a Samsung A620 and a Nokia 8890 now and where one drops out
the other still works. :-) With Sprint PCS and T-Mobile respectively.
Oh, and yes... I everything I said last time still holds true. Both the
Sanyo 8100 and the Samsung A620 have similar signal strengths in the bad
areas that I found with the Sprint PCS Network. And I learned that the
Samsung does not need to have the antenna up for Digital PCS Network,
because the antenna is mainly to improve analog signals when roaming.
And when I was using the Sanyo 8100, not only the bars of the signal on
the phone less but I heard skipping and my call was drop twice when I
hold the antenna or pulled it down. I only did this test a few times,
but everything happened consistently.
I hope everyone reading this understand that my tests were in the phones
stress areas... I found places where the phones signal was low or not
consistent to test the difference in signals of different phones. So,
this means that these phones have no problems what so ever when in a
good area.
The bottom line is... I still prefer the Samsung A620 over majority of
phone available with Sprint PCS. I hope this help those who are still
learning about Sprint PCS phones.
I'm taking time to write this because the opinions of others posted here
help me find the phone I like most, quickly and easily. Thank you.
