Earthlink and American Express now direct calls to call centers in
India, where if you're lucky the person handling your call almost speaks
English.
Earthlink still handles dsl stateside, but I did cancel my Amex card,
and made sure they knew why.

Re: Customer Service worse than Sprint
Don't forget to quit doing business with Microsoft, Sun, Dell, IBM, HP, GE,
Conseco, Ford, McKinskey, Citibank, British Airways, Texas Instruments
........
And while you're at it you better quit using the number system too (and
consequently your computer, your calculator ... - might just have to start
using those brain cells if you have any) .... wouldn't want you to use
anything that those ****ing Indians have something to do with, now would we
?
You want English you bigoted bastard ? Why don't you try finding one ****ing
american who speaks English first ? American slang would be laughed at in
the true home of the English language.
60% of those Indians working in call centers have at least a bachelor's
degree in a technical field - I would pick one of them over your average
American call center employee who holds nothing but a high school diploma to
answer my call any day.

Bigoted? Maybe it's just the fact that if I am dealing with a company
from the U.S., I want to deal with support from the U.S.
For every call center in India, there are that many jobless Americans.
You call it bigoted, I call it common sense.
Dummy.

Bachelor degrees don't mean anything if the person's accent is so thick that
you can't understand them.

Somtimes a bachelor's degree won't mean anything at all. I worked phone
support (computer company) and they hired a guy who had a bachelor's
(also MCSE, MCP, CCNA, A+, N+ etc..).
He didn't know how to use DOS and hung up on a customer, stating they
wern't taking him seriously, when they said they had Windows version 3.1
(And this was 3 years ago)

You should probably sell your stocks in those companies, or at least
voice your concern at the stockholders meetings. After all, it's the
stockholders who demand increased 'shareholders value' and result,
indirectly, the export of jobs to countries like India where the labor
rate is about one-tenth of the US.
We used to export blue-collar jobs to third world countries, and as
these countries became prosperous and began to shed the 'third world'
moniker and as their population become more educated, we now begin to
export white-collar jobs.

Leaving 150 million jobless Americans? :-(
(Gotta have a few who think they're important enough to boss aroud those
international call centers).
Just imagine the forewarding bill (redirecting the calls to other
countries)

With Voice over IP, that's the least of the costs.

God only knows why. American phone support is legendary for its
incompetence, apathy, and rudeness. I can't imagine India call
centers being any worse.
People are all excited about call centers moving to India but it's the
lowest support position you can have. Turnover is amazingly high and
pay is low. That is why the only people willing to do the job in
America are those who can barely speak coherent sentences unless they
are reading them off a cue card. I.e. morons.

Like Rob. When anyone asks a question here, they're likely to get Rob's
answer and then Tech Geek's answer. In the past couple of days, Tech Geek
has had to correct Rob several times.
This is a HUGE problem with SprintPCS customer service. Once they get off
of their script, they're basically worthless.

Do you think there are 150 million Americans without any marketable
skill, so completely lacking in training and ambition that working as
a call center drone is the best job they can get? I hate to break it
to you guys but phone support is barely white collar. It's a step up
from sweeping the floors.
I suspect a part of this is a side effect of minimum wage increases
and other regulations pricing these low skill positions out of the
market (which Democrats insisted could never happen, ever). I mean as
we know from SPCS the position barely calls for someone with a pulse,
so why the hell should they pay more here if they can get a better
deal in another country? You've likely dealt with Indian call center
reps without even knowing it.

Job export is not just limited to call centers. Jobs formerly held by highly
trained computer programmers earning $70-100K per year are also being
exported. Much engineering design work is also leaving the country.
All I can say is that I'm glad I'm retired. Pretty soon the only jobs left
will be medical/social services and cashiers.

Highly trained? LMFAO! Kids with four year degrees were getting out making
six figures with *no* experience whatsoever.
Cashiers are going to be computerized. In fact, I was in Home Depot the
other day and scanned my own items.
The problem is that the US has such a high standard of living compared with
other countries that there is an imbalance. There's nothing about Americans
that makes them more capable of programming, designing, operating on
patients, etc. The problem comes with free trade. Think of it as a lock
system a ship uses. Once all the gates are opened, the water settles to the
same level. So will standards of living as the barriers to free trade are
lifted.

Well, seeing as I build my own computer, drive a GM vehicle, and my
credit cards and insurance are with local banks...

India invented brain cells too?!

Well, I think you overreact. For one thing, the issue here isn't about
Indians, or any particular race of people. If the job center calls were
going to Zimbabwe, or Zambia, or China, or France or Australia, quite a
few of us would still be very unhappy. Why? Because American
corporations are expecting American people to buy their products and
services when they contribute nothing economically to the community they
serve. It's not that they're hiring people overseas to expand, they're
taking the domestic jobs away and replacing them with foreign jobs.
It's a little paradoxical to expect unemployed people to buy your warez.
