I'm looking for advice on how to get the best deal I can from Sprint
PCS. I don't want to get into the middle of a flame war but my SO wants
to add me to her Cingular Nation plan and split costs with me. It means
I definitely have a lower-cost option but for my own reasons I'd prefer
to stay with Sprint if I can get a reasonably good deal.
I currently have one line with 500/unlimited w/Vision for $45+$10
($55/month). My contract is up in about two weeks. My Sanyo 5300 is
pretty new and I'm happy with it so I don't want t replace it as my
primary phone.
What I'd like to do it to change my base plan to add F&CA. If I can get
8 pm N&W that would be great but it's not that important because I'm
never close to using up my minutes.
I'd also like to add a second line and use a Treo 600 on it. Credit's
not a problem on a second line; I had an aircard for a year but I gave
up on it last month because I had too many problems with it. I'm
primarly looking for PDA and email functionality, and I need to be able
to look at my email when I'm on the phone...that's why I need the second
line. Obviously I want to use add-a-phone to keep my monthly costs
down. However unlimited PCS-PCS isn't important because these are both
my devices.
Anyway, I'm looking for advice. I expect to get some discount from
SprintPCS on the Treo 600 because it'll be my second line. Can I get
additional discount if I renew my primary line? Am I better acting now
or waiting until my current contract ends? Should I try to do this over
the phone with retention or should I go to my local Sprint store? What
else should I be negotiating for?

Re: Looking for Advice
Sprint Store will rarely help you with anything.. best thing to do is
keep in over the phone... Do one thing BEFORE you do that!! Go to
Ratshack and buy one of the little tape recorders that hook up to the
phone so you can record the conversation.. This is the BEST way to
assure you have proof of being offered something. As soon as you start
recording you MUST let the CSR know you are recording, And it must be on
the tape. That is law!
Best of luck to you.

Re: Looking for Advice
You might want to go off contract and wait until November. When number
portability kicks in, you might be able to get a better contract than you
can right now. As suggested before, cancellation is the only thing that
seems to encourage Sprint to try to retain its customers.

Re: Looking for Advice
Your best bet is to wait until around the end of october. The stores
are going to be very interested in getting you to sign a contract.
There are new deals for existing customers coming out around 10/16/03.

Well, depending on where you are, you can do that now, for $5 extra.
The best thing to do is call *2 and ask if it's available. If it is,
you can add it on to your plan.

Never hurts to ask. I asked and got 8pm N&W at no charge a couple
months back.

You'll probably get the customary new-line-of-service discount if
they're offering one for the Treo 600, under the condition that you
agree to a contract on that line. But I wouldn't hold my breath on
anything beyond that. The Treo 600 is a new phone, so I doubt they're
willing to start losing money on it so soon.

Most call centers haver a standing rule that if the agent becomes
aware you are recording the call, they will ask you to stop
recording - thus not giving you permission to record the cal and
if you continue recording, it may not be admissable evidence.
Also, each state has its own law. Some states require only one of the
parties of interest (that would be you) to know the call was being
recorded, other states require both parties to know it.
The best way would be to ask for a ticket number and then call back
or visit a Sprint store to verify the information was correctly
annotated. You might also make sure the agent is aware of that you
are taking notes during the call, like making it obvious you are
writing everything down the agent says and read it back to them.

Re: Looking for Advice
Thanks, everyone. Most people suggested waiting until my contract is up
because it'll put me in a better bargaining position. But now I have a
couple of follow-up questions.
First, I've heard that retention is a one-time deal. If I get a
retention deal now then that means that I won't be able to get one in
the future. Is this a good time to play that card or do you think the
deals in November and December will be good enough that I should just
switch? (I suspect I don't have to go through retension to get the 8 pm
N&W but who knows).
Second, I'm still uncertain of the add-a-phone discount on a Treo 600.
I've heard $75 and I've heard $100 on a one-year add-a-phone deal, and
Treo Central is only offering a $50 mail-in rebate for an add-a-phone.
Finally, if the one-time cost and the monthly recurring cost were the
same for a CDMA Treo 600 and a GSM Treo 600, which is the better option?
Reportedly Sprint's 1xRTT is quite a bit faster than the
AT&T/Cingular/T-Mobile GPRS implementations but a GSM device (assuming I
could eventually get it unlocked) would have greater use when I travel
overseas.

Sprint employees verifying you can't trust Sprint employees.

NOT AT ALL. You just cant go back monthly. But get a rention deal with a
one year contract, and a year later, go for it again. Many folks have.

Two questions to answer. Which has better coverage where you live?
Do you go out of the country where GSM
would be useful?

Yes, I seem to go to Europe a couple of times a year so GSM is useful. I
take my trusty little unlocked Ericsson T28 tri-band GSM phone and buy a
pre-pay SIM (most often I seem to buy Vodafone). This also worked nicely a
couple of years ago when I spent time in Australia and New Zealand.
CDMA coverage is definitely better than GSM here but after all, Verizon
(formerly Primeco) and SprintPCS have had plenty of time to build up their
CDMA networks. AT&T has just turned up GSM/GPRS, and I've heard through the
grapevine that Cingular is "very close". (They've been marketing GAIT
phones to ease in the TDMA->GSM transition). Our "local" GSM provider,
Einstein PCS, is just that: a local provider, but word has it that T-Mobile
is about to start selling here. So I expect the local GSM landscape to
change rapidly.
Nevertheless I will primarily use the Treo locally for PDA and email.

Unless you live in Ohio.. Only one party involved (ie. being recorded as
well)has to know a recording is in progress. This also includes telephone
calls.

I love this. One can be in big trouble giving out legal advice when they
are not a lawyer. EVERY STATE IS DIFFERENT.
