Can anyone with the Treo 600 answer whether it can be used with the USB
cable (or infrared) as a modem (using #777) for Vision access from a
computer? The Handspring website makes no mention of this.

It may or may not work with the 600, you might want to email the
developers...

Re: Treo 600 as modem?
Sprint no longer supports using its cell phones as modems, and even Hatuncat
knows that.

I found with my Sanyo 4900 that there is a big difference between:
1) Sprint does not support using phones as modems, and
2) Sprint phones cannot be used as a modem.
In reality, it was a very easy step to set up my Sanyo 4900 as a modem
and it works *quite* well. Usually a 70-90k connection. I will be
working this weekend to get my Treo 600 set up as a data modem.
'will let you know.

Re: Treo 600 as modem?
I really wish sprint would resolve this 'grey' area in a meaningful and
competitive way.
Way back when you could use sprints wireless web for $10 a month to do
data connections based on you minutes.
Then Vision comes along, they have some problem metering the usage on
phones and want to sell 'unlimited' vision so they just go unlimited
but stop selling connection kits, keep dangling bluetooth phones in
front of people but not selling them, and list on their site that you
cant use your vision service to connect to a PDA or Notebook.
Heres where things get fuzzy. They have no middle ground in thier
plans... its either a phone plan with unlimited vison (without
notebook/pda connectivity) or a 'connection card' and a $40-80 plan for
so many MBs of data. Theres no plan for the 'casual' data user...
like me... I use my phone as a phone 90% of the time but want to
connect to the internet with my notebook a few times a year. Theres no
way to do this under sprints plans anymore without paying a fortune.
So people either goto other carriers or they use Vision for data anyway
since it works.
Sprint on the other hand, doesnt slap everyones hands since they have
to have a clue that they are ignoring a block of customers who need
data occasionally... so unless you go overboard and use lots of data
they typically leave you alone. The problem is still that your not
supposed to be doing it in your plan and they can cancel your vision at
any time if they think you are abusing things... what is abuse?
whatever sprint happens to think at the time... so its nice when you
have it but its always not quite right IMO.
Pricing gets wierder with PDA phones... lets say I have unlimited
vision on my Treo 300 (which i do)... thats $10 a month (well $15 now,
but i got an old plan) and I can use vision on my phone... or using my
pdas software (palmOS). Now lets say I take a Sanyo 8100 phone with a
datacable to a Palm PDA... according to plans that requires a data plan
of a minimum of $40 a month in addition to your voice plan. So the
same device capable of the same amount of data usage costs alot more if
they arent integrated.
Palm really needs to readdress this issue. TMoble for example has a
$19.95 unlimited data plan that you can use for whatever you want. Its
not as fast as sprint... but its clear cut and there are no surprises.
I really like the sprint network, I get good coverage whereever I go,
and back in the wireless web days they were on the cutting edge of
data... but now they offer plans at two extremes... they need to get
their act together or I know alot of folks who will be leaving come Nov
24th.

Just to correct a point in an otherwise excellent post, you don't have that=
=20
"minimum of $40 a month" option to tack on to your voice plan. Our system=
=20
treats that something like trying to sign up for a 500 minute and a 700 min=
ute=20
plan at the same time. Can't do it. The "data card" plans are exclusive o=
f=20
the voice plans. There's $15/month for unlimited Vision (since you did not=
=20
mention a PocketPC PDA) that does not support use of the phones as modems, =
or=20
there's $10/MB "casual" usage.

Sprint PCS didn't dangle them, Sony Ericsson did, then pulled out of
the entire North American market.

According to Rob Vargas, the S/E T608 still shows in his system, and may be out
Real Soon Now.
=============
As for the Kyocera 7135, I am unable to find the links to the Kyocera or Sprint
pages announcing its coming as those pages are history, but Google finds lots
of discussion in this news group between August 2002 and Feb 2003, telling of
its coming by those who claimed to know.
========
Then we had the Smasung i700 announced and never delivered
==========
And last but not least we were incorrectly told by someone who knew that the
Treo 600 would not
be sold by handspring to end users.

yes, but bluetooth has been around for quite a while now, and is rather
pervasive in GSM/GPRS phones. It seems to me that sprints management
has made a decision not to offer such phones as it complicates things
for their 'unlimited' vision marketing. If Sprint wanted to support
bluetooth you can bet there would have been more options than just the
608. Carriers have alot to say about what features they want in phones
on their networks... If sprint was serious about supporting bluetooth
it would already be available.

Re: Treo 600 as modem?
Your responses seem to have gone off on a "Sprint policy for internet access
on cell phones" tangent.
Try http://www.junefabrics.com/palmnet/. According to the things I've read
this is the best one. Plus, they explicitly mention Treo 600 support. You
can demo it before you buy it.

I have loaded PDANET
http://www.junefabrics.com/palmnet/
for my Treo600 and it works great!
$34.00 and I was good to go. Free download for trial period.
I use my treo600 for a data connection with my laptop and I
consistently get a 80-100k connection. 'can't say enough good about
it.
One little trick that's helpful................
Once you hook up and get a data connection, go to your "RUN" command
(hit start menu) and enter
ping -t www.google.com
This sits and pings Google once every second and keeps your data
connection alive without using any real bandwidth. Otherwise, your
phone keeps disconnecting when you are reading web pages or just
dinking around.
