Re: A500 Digital Roaming Problem-New Fix
I would like to try this but am scared. I read that changing this
setting could render the phone unusable on the sprint network. Has
anyone tried this and it work?

I have used it MANY times with out any negative side effects. Don't worry
about it. But try and get your PRL updated (*2 ask Clair about PRL and you
will be sent to a representative where you can ask to have you account
flagged for a PRL update) as this fixes many of these roaming issues, at
least in my area.

Not only that but software version WD29 has only been available since
July. This version can make a big difference in performance by
eliminating that 'call hanging' issue where you would have to power
cycle the phone before a call could be made or received.

The VH10 software wasn't too bad, but the VI16 software was really bad.
WD29 works very nicely for me and I have a nice performing and stable phone.

VH10 had some issues with the web and browser. Other than that it wasn't
bad.

Re: A500 Digital Roaming Problem-New Fix
1) As noted in the original post, I think it's the A500 firmware
that's at fault because a Nokia 3585i also with PRL 10020 correctly
favors digital roaming when in exactly the same location as the A500.
2) Good for you re: the 3 years. I have had three phones (lost two of
them) and it seems like 3 years. But, of course, you are correct. It
hasn't even been one year.

Perhaps it is a firmware bug in the Nokia that allowed it to favor Digital
when it shouldn't have? Really though, I believe it is more likely a case
where the firmware was able to make a decision about a PRL that wasn't
specifically addressed (for instance, equal weight SIDS, which to prefer?).
So, the A500 took the conservative analog route. If it was truely a
firmware problem, they would not have been able to change it here by simply
updating the PRL.

That is a bummer ... although you should try and keep track of your phone

Is that with WD28 firmware?

I don't think there ever was a WD28... The latest is WD29.

WD29. Yes. I have been at this firmware level since either late July or
very early August.

Tom,
I agree with your equal weight SIDS theory. I have noticed that my
phone in the past couldn't decide on whether to pull in the analog or
digital signal of Verizon when roaming. It would keep switching back
and forth between the two. I also believe this is/was mainly a PRL
issue and not software. I think the Nokia is the only phone that would
seem to stay locked on digital.
