Those of you using Sprint Long Distance should be aware
that if you choose to cancel, you have to advise you local
    carrier.

If you do not advise your carrier, Sprint wont either. It will
result in your being billed at a rate that you will find hard to
believe. ($4.63 per minute) Sprint will do nothing, and your
local carrier will do nothing. Seems that in your "Welcome"
package from Sprint, this is *****ed out. Got stung - hope you don't.

We specifically *told* our landline local carrier to put a PIC freeze on
our line because we _DON'T_ want the long distance carrier changed without
our consent. (PIC, by the way, stands for Primary InterExchange Carrier).

If you tell Sprint to cancel your plan, they will, and you will lose whatever
rates you had on the plan. $4.63 is outrageous, though.

Best bet is always to call your local carrier FIRST... no matter who you use
for long distance. And putting a PIC freeze on your landlines is always a good
    idea.

And if it wasn't absolutely clear from my first post - this is not a
    Sprint-specific issue.

Just out of curiosity, did you intend to move from having a LD
provider to not having any? Why would you cancel with Sprint without
    signing up with someone else?

BTW, as far as I'm aware, this is true of *any* Long Distance provider
for the home. If you cancel service without a move to another
provider, you have to handle the notification to the local carrier.
The company you switch to usuall takes care of that notification.

Its for your own protection. Eliminates some fly by nite "affiliate",
telemarketer, Long distance reseller, etc. from just arbitrarily switching
    your service without your knowing.
FYI its Caveat Emptor with a "r"

    right, rob.
also, if you do not choose an ld carrier on your landline following a
cancellation, the LEC (local exchange carrier) will not auto-assign a
carrier and you may be accesed a fee LEC's regard this as "TOLL
RESTRICTION" service on your line and will generally charge $2-3 or more per
line per month on your bill for the choice of not having a specified ld
carrier. this is a scam and a very tricky way of screwing over custoemrs on
an ongoing basis. (they also like to add a "deposit" for ld svcs following
such a restriction period, as is was "restricted.") a total scam

This has been true, well, forever! I have changed many times and found out
the hard way myself with AT&T (the first time I changed away from).
Normally it is not an issue when you switch to another provider, but if you
decide to have NO provider then it becomes an issue. You have to make two
calls, one to the LD provider and one to the local provider. Also keep in
mind that there is local long distance and long distance and that you can
have two different providers for each of these.

You are 100% correct. I had a similar issue with my local Verizon
service. I completely removed long distance as I was switching to
phone cards from SamsClub and Costco. Basically 3.2 cents per minute
with NO monthly fees, rechargable, no connect fee, and no taxes and
surcharges that the 10-10's add on, simple math showed after taxes and
charges, my previous MCI home long distance for 5 cents a minute
averaged about 9 cents after the fees and monthly charges, so I called
to remove long distance. I was told that I could switch to Verizon LD
or pay a monthly fee for no long distance. I chose to pay the fee as
I did not want anyone to accidently use my phone for LD calls. I
don't know what I have after the fact but I do not pay an extra fee
and when I try to dial a long distance number I get a recording that
it is not allowed. Maybe Verizon screwed up and has not actually
charged me for the lack of a LD carrier. So far so good.

Y;;eah, I went the calling card route (Sams) didn't have the slightest
idea that I had to notify Verizon. Most of my LD was being handled
by cell, and with taxes and fees, I was paying up the nose to Sprint
for LD. I foolishly thought that if I cancelled Sprint, Verizon would
    pick up my LD. NOT..........
