NEW YORK (Reuters) --Cell phone users have been known to complain about poor
service, but one New York man's mobile literally went down the toilet.

The man was on a suburban train from Grand Central Station on Wednesday night
when he went to the bathroom to make a phone call, dropped the phone into the
toilet bowl and then his hand and arm became stuck trying to retrieve it,
officials said.

Metro-North Railroad staff could not help the man, so they stopped the train and
called police officers and firefighters to extricate him, a process that took 90
minutes using "jaws of life" rescue equipment.

"The toilets are made of aluminum so I imagine he was down on hands and knees
with his shirt rolled up and hand and arm down inside, trying to flush out his
cell phone," said Jim Cameron of the Connecticut Metro-North commuter council.

He said that because of the design of the train toilet, the mobile probably
ended up in a chemical holding tank.

A spokesman for the railroad that serves the northern suburbs of New York and
Connecticut identified the man as Edwin Gallard, 41, of New York, who suffered a
minor injury to his arm as firefighters cut the toilet apart.

The track was closed and thousands of commuters were delayed during the evening
rush hour.

The phone has not yet been recovered.

I liked the statement that 'the rail company was "not particularly
interested" in going through the toilet's waste tank to retrieve the lost
phone'. And would the customer *really* want it back after he knew what it
had been "marinated" in?

man in question for damages caused by rerouting trains/passenger delays/
etc, not to mention the costs of the work crew with blow torches cutting
apart the WC.

What many may not realize is that those modern retention toilets on
many cars (I am most familiar with Amtrak Superliners) will shutdown
on the entire car, if something indigestible goes into one toilet.
Last year, returning on the Sunset Ltd. from Houston, someone had put
a diaper in a toilet on 0230 west of SanAntonio. It was finally fixed
at NewOrleans after several attempts elsewhere, and it cost a 2 hour
delay at NewOrleans.
Design Flaw, Perhaps, but those are the same toilets that are used on
the high and mighty airliners.

Not too long ago I heard a story where several people died when a girl dropped
her cell phone down into an outhouse pit. She paid some guy to go in and
retrieve it; he was overcome by the fumes. A second guy went in after the first
guy; he, too, was overcome. Both died. IIRC, a third person was also
killed/injured.

Well, given the fact that he actually stuck his hand down that =
"****-hole" to retrieve it, he really wanted it back whatever seeped =
into his phone.

Personally, if my cell phone jumps off of me into that toilet hole =
(hopefully not) I would report it lost and get a replacement =
immediately. At least I will have a brand new phone and better cellular =
phone.

which have sepperate breakers for the toilet. Why they couldn't put a
$10 circuit braker on the Superliner's one, is beyond me...
