Three weeks ago I requested a local number port from a Verizon cell phone to
a PacBell land line. The PacBell representative said the port should take
about three hours. So far, it hasn't happened at all. When I call PacBell to
inquire, they say they've made multiple requests to Verizon to release the
number, Verizon has not done so, and there's no more that they can do until
    Verizon lets go.

The longer Verizon can stall, of course, the longer they can collect their
$70/month cell fee from me, for a phone I am no longer using. This makes me
    unhappy.

Is there any way to =force= ("encourage") Verizon to release my number?

And this is the second time Verizon has done this to me: a year ago I
requested a port from another Verizon phone to a Vonage VOIP. That one
required three months of waiting (and paying) until Verizon let the number
go. In essence, Verizon appears to be gouging me a fee of $210 per number
    port.

I don't know if it's just me this is happening to. Would anyone have any
online references to any lawsuits against Verizon? (I've searched, but
    haven't found anything yet.)

A week ago I filed a complaint with the FCC. For whatever good it may do.

    thanks,
    Garry

PS - I later had to move the Vonage number to a Sprint phone. Vonage, for
comparison, let go after only three or four days.

Can you even do that? My VZW to Sprint PCS port was completed by VZW within
four *hours.* I know landline telcos will stall like you'd never believe
when you port from a landline to a cell, but that is obviously not what
    you're trying to do.

PacBell even volunteered a reward of $60 for my "returning" to them -- to my
total surprise. That will be a help with the $210.

Okay, so =sometimes= VZW is reasonably fast. I had had a hunch it had
something to do with it not being a cell line. (Something political, not
    something technical...)

I'm not surprised. SBC was running "come back to us" promotions in my
hometown for some time, up until I left.
