I realize this may have been asked & answered but I haven't been able to
    find it.

It there a consensus on the best prepaid plan value? I'm in north-central
Florida and probably would only use about 20 minutes a month.

    Thanks in advance... Fred

We're using T-Mobile, if you buy a 1000 minutes at $100 you can keep them
    for a year.

    JoshIII responded:
    ..
For the best coverage and the simplest to use prepaid, I'd recommend a CDMA
    TracFone.

TracFone is a little harder to activate and setup, because the phone itself
has to be programmed. Once this has been accomplished (setup is easy - you
just type in a series of big numbers), TracFone is the easiest to use and
airtime cards are readily available at Wal-Mart, Kmart, Best Buy, grocery
    stores, etc.

No other prepaid phone puts minutes (units) remaining and due date on their
    display.

TracFone has refurbished models you can get for free with purchase of a $20
(40 minute) airtime card from the tracfone website..

TracFone has more free airtime promotions than all the other prepaid
companies combined. Get a Refer-A-Friend referral from another TracFone
user *before* you activate and get 100 free minutes.

For emergency (minimal) use, you can keep a TracFone activated for as little
as $10 a month (or free if you can get 6 referrals per year).

Minutes never expire as long as you add airtime minutes before the due date
shown in the display. Due dates are normally set to 60 days after adding
    airtime.

No charge or penalty for deactivation at anytime - other than loosing your
remaining airtime minutes. Remaining airtime can be transferred to another
TracFone if upgrading to a different model.

    TracFone CDMA models (v120, v60i, 2285, c343, 5180i) all allow roaming.
The v120, v60i, and c343 models are trimode (meaning they cover 800+1900Mhz
    bands, digital, and analog modes).

When roaming on the CDMA models, the cost per minute jumps to 2 times the
local rate. TracFone(s) will roam on other networks with no additional
    airtime charge.

It's worth noting that it's slightly more expensive then T-Mobile's
$100/1000 minute prepaid, which is good for a year.

Maybe you need Beyond Wireless but you have to use 1 minute every 60 days to
    keep the minutes from expiring.

Thier prices look great (same $100/1,000 min, no expire), is there a catch?
One minute a month I can handle. Do you know if thier coverage is any good?

At the end of the year you'd need to add more funds, but the minutes
rollover. Also, you can use the cell for long distance calls just to
use up that airtime (saving you money on your main long distance bill)

The one minute a month was the dealbreaker for me, I'm out of the US
most of the time and only use my phone every 3-6 months (but when I do
use it, I can use several hundred minutes at once)

Other then that my research didn't show anything majorly scary, but I
didn't spend much time since I knew upfront I couldn't meet those
    requirements.

Oh, the other benefit... If I'm not mistaken, you only have to put in
$100 the first year, after that you become a member of the "Gold
Rewards" program, which means your minutes don't expire for a year.

If I'm not mistaken you should be able to just add $10/year and keep
your minutes for a full year, after the first year.

    JoshIII responded:
Looks like Beyond Wireless uses TDMA models only.

TDMA coverage is slowly but surely diminishing, and being phased out, or
    users switched to GSM.

Even if Beyond Wireless offers GSM models (none of the Nokias they offer
were GSM), your rural area coverage will suck.

GSM works great as long as you are relatively close (less than 10 miles) to
the nearest interstate, or city. Out in the boonies you will have limited
or no coverage, because GSM cellphones *DO NOT* fall back to analog. Its
digital coverage or no coverage with GSM.

Stick with CDMA for rural area coverage, or be prepared to own two phones, a
GSM/TDMA and a CDMA for backup. CDMA and TDMA models (usually) have analog
    capability.

"The most sophisiticated cellphone in the world is only as good as its
    network".

GSM and TDMA prepaid plans have better rates, because there are rural area
    coverage issues with them.
