Free life time cell phone minutes?

After watching the film CORE in which a techno geek manages to give one of
the character free life time minutes on his cell phone just by using a
piece of foil to make a sound pitch over the phone to the character's phone
company. I'm wondering if this is just Hollywood hype or can it actually
be done.
