I am looking for some advice. We fulltime in an rv and I use verizon cell
service. I have a laptop and currently do internet on my cellphone through
verizon, which is super slow, but free. I am looking for a faster way to
access the internet. Have researched the various air cards, sierra, etc and
do not know which way to go. Any suggestions out there?

At the present time the fastest wireless data services would be the CDMA
EV-DO. From what you describe you must be using your phone as a modem to
access a dial-up Internet at soemthing like 14.4 kbps. Right? For something
like $70/month you can add packet data service and get much higher speed.
T-Mobile has GPRS/EDGE almost everywhere on their net which will deliver
between 40 kbps and 120 kpbs for $29/month (I think that price is right).
Within a few years you should be able to get much higher speed wireless data
after the FCC auctions the new 3G specturm and the TD-CDMA networks get
built.

So speed up.. <grin>
if you upgrade to a blackberry 7130e you can tether to your laptop at
broadbandaccess speeds.
or..
go with the verizon Kyocera aircard, it allows you to plug in a
antenna for better reception when needed
all you can eat data with a voice plan is only 59.99 per month.
if you are price shopping.
a free network card on tmobile and 29.99 unlimited on the edge
network.
its slower then verizon but cheap

Broadband is now 5-8Mbps. Verizon's wireless internet service is HARDLY
broadband....more like old ISDN speed...128K?

NationalAccess is up to 128K (CDMA 1xRTT).
BroadbandAccess goes up to 400-500K (CDMA 1xEVDO). Technically, that IS
broadband speed. (Technically, so is 128K!)
Anyone who expects cellular data to match the fastest DSL or cablemodem
speeds is going to be disappointed...

I was disappointed. At the Verizon display in Circuit City, it took the
Blackberry over a minute to download www.cnn.com and all the spam. That's
hardly broadband. We were a great distance from the tower. If it fell
over, we might be in danger of it hitting us.

Re: cell phone/internet
Shhhh....you're outing the industry's dirty little secret.....no
bandwidth.
I just laugh when I hear them trying to push people to high bandwidth
apps....without having the bandwidth to support it.
It is the chicken or the egg problem....they need the money from the
apps to pay for the bandwidth and they need the bandwidth to support
the apps.
Does this remind you of the ongoing problem we are still seeing with
getting adequate bandwidth for the Internet to users?

No, no Larry...you don't understand.
It's not that you want to see CNN, it's "Do you want some CNN with that
spam"?
As you point out, the industry has alot of work to do before I lay my
money down.

Crazy Knology Cable sent me a spam trying to sell me, the third biggest
usenet hog in their company system, more bandwidth, 7 Mbps. So, I
ponied up the extra $15/mo to go from 4 to 7. Usenet is included with a
DIRECT link to Usenetserver.com which is in the same building in Atlanta
as Knology. Trace time is 22ms from here and 10ms from their back
traceroute. Usenetserver, unlike Comcrap's 2GB/month Giganews Denial of
Service, gives us 6 simultaneous ports, no GB limit, no bandwidth limit
except the cap on the 7Mbps modem. There's less than 160GB left on my
new 400GB G: drive already! Xnews is downloading a "few movies" from
alt.binaries.movies.divx as I'm typing this, just a catchup since 4PM.
Sure glad we went from cheap CDRs to cheap DVD+Rs. I'm converting all
the stuff to DVDs because the racks are all full of CDRs and I need the
space....(c;
THAT's "broadband"....
I couldn't run any of the speed test websites from the Blackberry. No
javascript or JAVA. It's probably best....
Cellular might be passe' here in Charleston. Read this story:
http://www.dslreports.com/shownews/70868
WiFi will spread like wildfire after the initial buildout in the city.

Fulltimer,
If faster data speed and pay are not obstacles, consider satellite
access to the Internet.

Unless latency is a problem, as it is for things like games.

If John McCain gets the 2008 Republican Presidential nomination,
my vote for President will be a write-in for Jiang Zemin.
