What ever happened with the idea of 2 lines on one phone/sim?

I remember my original pre-SIM US phone (way back when) supported 2
lines however I never heard of nor read of any company offerring this
    service.

Now it appears that this functionality has all but been been removed
(and is generally unmentioned). Saying that, my Nokia 8310 does appear
to still have this functionality in its menu system, however, of course,
    the SIM doesnt support it.

With the SIMS becoming larger and larger memory-wise, does anyone have
any info regarding dual numbers on one phone? (I would even be
interested in the ability to flash/reprogram the SIM myself to support
the fuctionality). Do any european carrier support dual numbers on one
    SIM?

Please do not tell me about the dual SIM adapters that replace the
back-side of the phone. These dont allow simultaneous usage of both
    lines.

    Thanks.

I think most GSM phones (Nokia at least) have this facility, but I have
never heard of a "service" provider actually facilitating same.

    Re: Dual line SIM

Being in the USA, SIMS are still a little mysterious. Wasn't there some
kind of battery compartment that was able to hold 2 SIMs?
I eqaute dual SIMs as having dual NAMs (CDMA). Basically the ability
to have one phone registered to two cellular providers with two numbers
internally and then swapping SIMs without having to take one out and
replace it with another, usefull for international travelling? Or using
one of the dual (prepaid) SIMs with a better international or roaming
rate and another SIM with cheaper local airtime rates, for example.

Don't you just select SIM 2 and connect with the alternative carrier?
