On Verizon Wireless, I am charged by the minute for the small amount
of data usage I make (Primarily HetItNow Accuweather). In the past,
I've also tethered it to my laptop via a data cable and been charged
    by the minute.

Does T-Mobile have a similar option for data by the minute, or do I
have to sign up for an expensive data plan? My palm email program,
Snapper, uses ports 993 and 465 (secure IMAP and SMTP).

    Sort of, and no.

You can go minute to minute (at 9.6kbps) but you need your own dial-up
    ISP to connect to.

Or, you can sign up for an inexpensive data plan called T-Mobile Web for
$6/month for unlimited access (very port limited, however.).

No a problem. T-Mobile Web has the e-mail ports open (including 993 and
    465) and T-Mo runs a proxy for limited web browsing (you set your
    browser's proxy settings to 216.155.165.50:8080.)

Sure, there's no streaming, file sharing, or http downloads bigger than
1MB (big e-mail attachments are fine, though,) but for a lousy six bucks
for unlimited POP/IMAP mail and basic browsing, it's the best data deal
    in wireless.
