I'm currently with Nextel and my last 3 phones with them have a simple
way to open them - a button on the top side.

But Nextel is on it's way out, and I'm currently testing both T-mo and
Cingular looking for options. I have a friend who owns a few phones
and I've been testing reception with his unlocked phones and some pre-
    pay sims.

BUT - none have the push button open, and as I search on GSM Arena and
other sites, it seems this is a hard to find option in the GSM world.

It may seem like a minor thing, but it is something I've grown used to
and for any flip users who've had their fingers slip when attempting
to open the phone with one hand, you'll know how nice an option it can
be to have a spring loaded flip on a button...

SO - anyone know of a GSM flip-open (aka clamshell) phone that has the
ability to open via spring loaded button? If anyone hasn't seen this
    - check out the Nextel i880, i870, and so on.

    Thanks for the help

    Richard

I'm out of my depth here, because I've never even seen one of those phones.
But I'm gonna hazard a guess.

I'd expect the spring-loading to put extra stress on the hinge, making it more
likely to fail. Nextel used to brag that some of its Iden phones were
unusually beefy and therefore more durable than its competitors' phones. Maybe
some of those phones were the ones with the spring loading. And maybe nobody
makes a GSM phone whose hinge can take that kind of punishment.

At some point, I had a candy bar phone with a slide-out keypad.

The original design was spring-loaded and operable via pushbutton, but the USA
version had been dumbed down to eliminate the spring-loaded part bco some sort
    of litigation issue. Go figure....-)

Sort of- Sprint's long term plan is to get individual consumers and small
businesses off of Nextel's voice service and onto Sprint's CDMA network,
to leave Nextel's bandwidth open to large commercial accounts and
government users. The new CDMA/iDen hybrid phones are a step in that
direction. Boost Mobile's popularity, (an iDen prepaid MVNO Sprint got
stuck with in the Nextel buyout) is a thorn in Sprint's side- those
customers chew up bandwidth with less profitability (to Sprint) than a
    corporate Nextel customer.

The Erickson T28 World phone meets your requirements. It's an older model
    though.

That's a blast from the past. I'm not sure the T28 qualifies as a clamshell
anyway. They just don't make them like that anymore.

That was a great phone for the time. It's still one of the smallest phones
out there. Unfortunately, ours pretty much has hit the dust from extensive
use. Plus, it doesn't have 850 GSM, which is kind of important these days.

I never used one, but I do remember it was very popular at the time, with
the only complaint being that the interface was a bit sluggish. I did try a
T39 when it came out, but didn't really like it and gave it up after a few
days. Speaking of great small phones, my favorite of all time remains the
Nokia 8890. I used it happily for two years, until I decided I couldn't go
    on without WAP anymore...
