A one year expiration isn't good enough for you?

Sorry- that's the best there is right now. Speakout Wireless (sold in 7-
11 convenience stores), Cingular and T-Mobile offer 1-year expirations.

Short term, Speakout wireless would be cheapest- all of their airtime
cards last one-year. Long term would be T-Mobile- you need to spend $100
for a one-year card, butafter that, all refill cards, including their $10
cards, extend your expiration for a year.

Stores only. The plan is continuing for the foreseeable future.

Try visiting 7-11s in less affluent areas for best prepaid selection.

What kind of "use when needed" do you need, Aaron? Is this just for
emergencies? You don't need to purchase ANY service from any of them for
just calling 911. Every one of my vehicles has an old reliable AMPS 3W
bagphone that powers from a cigarette lighter outlet and has no DEAD
internal battery...in the trunk. That's my "emergency cellphone". It
works when nothing else will connect like the pitiful little toyphone.
It costs NOTHING to use, but will only call 611 and 911. They cannot
refuse you emergency service. FCC rules.

    Next idea.....

Do you REALLY need cellular phone service for this intermittent phone
line, or can you wait until you can get to a destination or wifi hotspot?
I'm asking this because I'm an avid Skype user, with independent wifi
Skype phone (Netgear SPH101) and through my laptop I carry around with
me. A very intermittent user like yourself might be able to wait until
he gets near a hotspot to make those really few calls you say. N
Hollywood has got to be just saturated with free wifi hotspots that will
NOT work from a moving car, but will work on Skype just great by simply
pulling into the parking lot, logging the laptop on and making the call.

I know that sounds inconvenient until you consider Skype is FREE to any
other Skype-equipped computer on the PLANET.....and Skype has a YEARLY,
truly UNLIMITED, 24/7/365 telephone out service called SkypeOut for only
$30 PER YEAR! You can call from any wifi or wired broadband internet
connection you can find, in the USA and Canada, TO any landline or
cellular phone in the USA and Canada, including Hawaii and Alaska and
talk FOREVER, if you so desire, for $30/YEAR...a real bargain. No
minutes expire, talk as long as you like, any time you like.

Think about it.....there ARE alternatives to tracfones. Skype makes a
GREAT home phone, too, if you already have broadband internet in the
house. I dumped my wired landline years ago. Who need it, its taxes,
its long distance ripoff, its sales people hounding you during dinner?

http://www.skype.com/ The software and Skype-to-Skype service to the 100
million other Skypers is always FREE!

If you want Skype to RECEIVE landline/cellphone calls, buy Skype IN for
$38/YEAR and you get your own phone number....which DOESN'T HAVE TO BE
WHERE YOU LIVE. I have two, $38 each/year. One is in Charleston, SC,
the other is in London, England. You can buy up to 10 phone numbers on
ONE Skype. Unlike your cellphone, too, you can run 10 Skypes on ONE
account simultaneously. I regularly run my desktop Skype, Netgear
portable wifi Skype phone and sometimes my laptop on Skype
    simultaneously. They all ring if someone calls...(c;

LOL, exactly right. The stores in the more affluent areas don't sell
many SpeakOut plans. It's not a good deal, and the coverage is limited
    to Cingular's network.
