    When we go to the (recently-aquired) cabin we are just on the edge of cell
    phone service.
    We can get a signal less than a mile from the cabin, in terrain that is
    heavily forested and has variances of elevation of no more than 50 feet
    vertical
    We really don't want to have permanent (line) phone service in the cabin,
    but it would be nice to have cell phone service just in case

    Someone suggested we get a cell phone booster for the car and/or cabin

    Any advice and experience with such a device would be appreciated

    Oh yes, primary service is T-Mobile
    But Cingular is the provider in and around the cabin
    The phones are Motorola Razor V3s
    We also have some Motorola V300s that could be left at the cabin for 911 if
    a booster is a solution

    I live under the same condition. I have no service inside the house. I had
    an extra magnetic antenna for the vehicle. I put the antenna on top of the
    roof and ran the wire inside through a window. I have two bars of signal
    now. Not able to walk around inside the house and talk but can set in my
    chair and talk all I want.
    Maybe it will work for you.

    $499
    Easy to install....
    Works on all 800 cellphone and PCS systems.
    3 watts and a high gain antenna DO make a difference!

    I was reading Verizon's new customer agreement looking to see what tricks
    they're using to keep customers from suing them, now, with a new company
    policy. I noticed Verizon Wireless now has a whole paragraph telling you
    you cannot have a booster amp or repeater or anything that'll connect
    your phone to their system.

    It's BS.....It's not their system.

    These bastards keep calling me so I'm feeding them to the spambots.

    Go to http://www.verizonwireless.com/ and scroll to the bottom of the
    spam on "Customer Agreement", which is NOT the nearly inaccessible data
    customer agreement, but is the one for the phones.

    After this document downloads, ad nauseum (you need broadband), look
    under the heading:
    "Our Rights to Limit or End Service or This Agreement"
    where it says, and I quote:

    "You agree not to resell our service to someone else without our prior
    written permission. You also agree your wireless phone won't be used for
    any other purpose that isn't allowed by this agreement or that's illegal.
    (ED - I wonder what percentage of VZW's best customers are drug dealers?)

    (below here is the quote)*******************************************
    You agree that you won't install, deploy, or use any regeneration
    equipment or similar mechanism (for example, a repeater) to originate,
    amplify, enhance, retransmit or regenerate a transmitted RF signal.

    (ED - OK, FESS UP! HOW MANY OF YOU GOT THAT DA4000 LINEAR STASHED UNDER
    THE FRONT SEAT OF THE ESCALADE?! COME ON! OUT WID IT! DAMN! And, no
    more home repeaters just so you can use your phone in the living room!)

    WE CAN, WITHOUT NOTICE, LIMIT, SUSPEND, OR END YOUR SERVICE OR ANY
    AGREEMENT WITH YOU FOR THIS OR ANY OTHER GOOD CAUSE, including, but not
    limited to: (a) paying late more than once in any 12 months;

    (b) incurring charges larger than a required deposit or billing limit
    (even if we haven't yet billed the charges);
    (ED - This one is interesting! If my deposit was $50 and my cellphone
    bill is $79.95, normally, I've incurred charges larger than my deposit!
    If I didn't PAY a deposit in the first place, ANY CHARGE BRINGS OUT THE
    DEATH SQUADS!

    (c) harassing our employees or agents;
    (ED - Does that include stealing their chairs so I can sit down while I
    wait and wait?? If I steal a chair so the old lady with the cane can sit
    down while SHE waits and waits, who get terminated, her or me? She's the
    one sitting in it!)

    (d) lying to us;
    (ED - But not them lying to you, obviously, which is "normal".)

    (e) interfering with our operations;
    (ED - Damn! No more 50 caliber depleted uranium shots through the cell
    cabinets, OR ELSE! You boys quit trying to shoot through the antenna
    panels, too!)

    (f) breaching this agreement; (g) "spamming," or other abusive messaging
    or calling;
    (ED - If you use your phone, you've breached this agreement....somewhere.
    AND NO MORE SENDING VERIZON NASTY EMAILS OR *****ING TO THE 611
    OPERATORS!)

    (h) modifying your wireless phone from its manufacturer's specifications;
    (ED - This line makes it OK to restore manufacturer features Verizon has
    turned off to sell back to you, right??)

    (i) providing credit information we can't verify;
    (ED - How the hell are YOU supposed to know what credit information those
    stupids they hire can't verify, in violation of this contract??)

    (j) using your service in a way that adversely affects our network or
    other customers
    (ED - See? I told you if you turn the damned thing on you breached this
    agreement!)

    ; or (k) allowing anyone to tamper with your wireless phone number.
    (ED - Anyone? What about that little nerdy kid at the service counter?
    Isn't he "anyone" in the company's eyes? What about the salesgirl
    programming in the phone I just bought? She's "anyone"...and a FOX!)

    We can also temporarily limit your service for any operational or
    governmental reason. If you file for bankruptcy, our rights to limit,
    suspend, or end your service or any agreement with you will be governed
    by bankruptcy law."
    (ED - I brought up the bankruptcy webpage on their demo aircard computer:
    http://www.verizonwireless.com/b2c/g...entType=Legal%

    Bloomington, IL 61702

    and asked the dizzy blonde behind the VZW counter, "Is Verizon Wireless
    going bankrupt or have they already? I don't wanna buy a phone if it's
    not gonna work in a few weeks from now! What's this Bankruptcy
    Administration doing, closing the company? Be sure you cash your
    paycheck fast!"

    Not a single talking head in the shop knew what this meant.....(c;
    Tuesdays will never be the same....(c;

    Verizon on 611 didn't know, either!

    They look at your GPS position and notice that everyone else near that
    position has little or no service, except you are so strong CDMA has your
    transmitter turned down to 20 mw and you're still swamping the receiver.

    There are very few cell phones that work inside a brick and steel I-beam
    building. When I go to B.J.'s Warehouse, Wal-Mart or such, I need to be
    near a window or door to get a signal. That's been true for just about
    every cell phone / carrier I've used. It may very well be the nature of
    the beast.

    My experience using TMobile has been different. At places like Wal-Mart,
    Costco, Sam's Club, Home Depot, etc, my wife and I always call each
    other when we're done with our individual browsing to find each other
    and head to the checkout counter.

    Like all carriers, service quality varies by area. In my hometown of
    Honolulu and places I frequently visit such as southern California,
    Florida and Houston, TX I find the service to be excellent - fact I've
    had no problems anywhere I've gone in the USA. T-Mobile has a quality
    of service guide that is very accurate on their website. You can check
    the quality right down to a specific street.

    To make a blanket statement like "(Any Carrier) is bad" based on one
    phone in one (unstated) area is not particularly accurate or helpful.
    Did you also consider that you may have had a bad phone?

    I Agree T-Mobile in Torrington Connecticut is great! but
    because they use 1900MHZ... Not great in Stone buildings (Salvation
    Army, Saint Marons, Torrington Community Soup Kitchen probally a few
    others) but In my apartment I hit all 7 of the 7 bars of my Nokia
    6340i without a problem!
    Contrast that with my Alltel Nokia 3585i, its the same deal
    signal wise. Only in my apartment I only get 4 bars out of 7.

    I live in a small apartment complex in the Seattle area. All 4 of the
    major carriers have very good coverage everywhere except where I live.
    None of them get a signal inside the complex, except for cingular. I see
    residents walking around the outside of the complex talking on their
    cell phones, I did that too. Now I have Cingular and I get full bars of
    signal almost everywhere in my apartment, both 2 and 3g.
    Signal depends on where you are, no matter what the carrier.

    One should never look at the number of "bars" as any indication of
    signal strength. They're put there by the manufacturer of the phone.
    One manufacturer might decide that a weak signal deserves one bar,
    while the next thinks two would be more appropriate. Etc., etc. Not
    only is there no standard between manufacturers, there's not even a
    standard between phones from the *same* manufacturer.

    The fact that you changed carriers, and consequently phones, might
    have something to do with you seeing "more bars."

    Perhaps thats true but then again, we need a way to compare
    products that is a little more definiative than saying. Brand A
    service sounds better than Brand B. which drops calls all over the
    place!. Sure if the phones gave us the -dbm we could use that but most
    phone owners are not going to want to go that far.
    As for which one actual works better? Its a toss up really.
    T-mobile is a little more "tinny" whereas Alltel is more bold and full
    sounding (I know it isn't a barbaque sauce, but "bold" sound kinda
    fits).
    BTW. T-mobile hits all 7 bars in my Torrington Walmart
    as Alltel also hits the 7 bars. I believe the cell tower must be
    close to Walmart to have that type of signal INSIDE the store.
