DoCoMo LG FOMA L601i WCDMA / GSM Phone Unlock / Sim Hack

From what I've read it seems that unlocking my phone is not possible. I was
wondering if it is possible to hack my sim card or possibly convince my
local AT&T store to register my former DoCoMo card on their network. The
card is no longer activated. I can view networks on the phone and it lists
the AT&T network and TMobile here in the USA. Is sim hacking a possiblilty?

Have you tried asking DoCoMo for an unlock code?

Well its my phone I had in Japan. I think the official answer from them is
that the phone is only designed to work on their network. Expecially since
it doesn't say LG clearly anywhere on the phone. It says DoCoMo on
everything including the battery. Another problem is I do not speak enough
Japanese to ask them about unlocking my phone. The phone was specifically
designed for their service.

Most carriers in the US and Europe do give away unlock codes after some
sort of grace period. Of course that doesn't say a lot about DoCoMo.
However, asking them is your best chance, no carrier will activate an
alien SIM card on his network.
