Will Apple Iphone unlocked work with Tracfone/StraightTalk

so does anyone know if there is a new carrier file that will include the MMS. The one Samuel listed workes great for data but not the MMS.

I have to give the credit for the below listed infromation to SAMUEL, I have my iPhone 3g with 4.2.1 working with my Straight Talk Nokia E71 sim card, my phone is neither unlocked or jailbroken, I just followed the instructions below, and the data and internet is just the same as it was with the AT&T plan, the service provided by AT&T is extremely poor, but I love the iPhone and the $45.00 unlimited straight talk plan makes up for the poor AT&T service in my area.
I do not have MMS working and I do not plan on doing a jailbreak on my phone, I will try the app store to see if there is anything "instant" for MMS, if not I am sure SAMUEL will figure out something he is the MAN...LOL LOL


ok if you haven't found it yet or not here it is:

Basically, as most of you know... you can place and receive calls... and the same with txts... BUT no MMS or internet... well the solution is simple...

1. Power off iphone
2. insert ST sim
3. Power on iphone
4. Option A: Manually edit your APN info using the iphone config utility OPTION B: download the premade ST carrier file. I did option B and everything works great.

Premade carrier file: StraightTalk.mobileconfig

What I did to get the carrier file on the iphone was just simply emailed the above link to myself... checked my email on my iphone using Wifi and clicked start download. It asks if you wanna install the file... simply select install. Viola!! done!

So, today I found this forum, and this particular thread. I have read every post made so far, and must say, you all know WAY more than me.
I was just wondering if all of this would work with an iPhone 2g. I know someone said that they dont tinker with iPhone 2g's, but hypothetically could it work? I have mine jailbroken and unlocked. There is no way that i was going to pay the astronomical plan prices AT&T wants, so i just use it on the pay as you go plan. My cousin has ST and loves it, and I have been thinking about switching for the longest time. But i dont want to have to go and buy a $200 phone just for the sim card.
Assuming this works with my old ass iPohne 2g.
Also, is there any way I can get MMS on my iPhone 2g, without having to be connected to the internet? On the pay as you go plan, I only get edge, and it never works, so i only have internet capability when im around wifi, which kind of defeats the purpose of on iPhone.

tiffy255 follow the steps in my post above yours, it will work, but you are going to have to buy the E71, I know it is a bunch of money, I think it is well worth the investment.
As for txting or MMS I am not sure about the 2g iphone there is probably and app for that

OK, this might be a dumb question (!). When you register your iphone with Straight Talk, which serial #/IMEI number do you use-- the Nokia E71 or the iphone?

One other question-- is following the great instructions that Samuel provided (i.e. downloading the carrier file, etc) the same as 'jailbraking', or is jailbraking another process altogether?

Polkad- Jailbreaking is totally different than downloading the carrier provider file. If you wanted to jailbreak,i would suggest going to jailbreakme.com on your iPhone, but lately there have been some problems with people I know jailbreaking anything.

All of your are right to some degree. The truth is this has been a developing story, affecting the answers. Some of these older posts were accurate at one time but now they are not. In October of last year, 2010, Straight Talk release one model phone the Nokia E71, it has an unlocked AT&T sim card in it. This sim card can be inserted in ANY AT&T 3G phone and it will work, it does not even require the phone/iPhone to be unlocked!

But there are some complications. If you want Pic Messaging to work, it has to be unlocked. And you will not receive Visual Voicemail but there is a simple "fix" for that to get the native Voicemail button working on the iPhone.

Now, here is the last development, a couple weeks ago, the Nokia E71 was pulled from the Straight Talk and Walmart.com websites as "out of stock". I called Straight Talk and they say the will not be selling anymore of these phones for my Zip code. The kicker is, they are out of stock for ALL zip codes I checked. My conclusion is they are pulling the phone much like they did the Samsung Finesse touch screen phone they offered last year.

So go to Walmart.com and do a search for the Nokia E71 at your local store. Currently what's left on the shelf is all they appear to be selling.

I tried to ask a question on the above and someone that I don't recall the log in name was furious with what I had written. Nevertheless, those comments are negative to myself and I just throw them away from my post. Now, I just want to say that I have the Iphone 3g and is working fine with Straight Talk. I also bought 2 other smartphone for my niece, and son and they are very happy and pleased with Straight Talk. $90 is all I pay for all the 3 cellphones per month, compare to my contract cell company a month $300 for 2 persons on a 2 yr. contract.

I'd say if the unit is unlocked, it will work with any carrier..

Does it matter what type of iphone you have? I want to purchase an iphone since I will be able to use it on straight talk now..

I've had an e71 for about 6 months now on straight talk network.
I'm going to buy an unlocked iphone on ebay but need to know if it matters what ios and version the iphone is??? Ive never had an iphone so I'm clueless.
So what type of iphone do I need to buy?

Will the iphone need to be activated through At&T first with their sim card or as soon as I get it in the mail, can I insert my straight talk sim card into it?

I bought the iphone 3gs running 4.2 last week and could not be happier. Had the internet up and running in about 2 min. Everything works great.

I see that AT&T and Apple have, (or at least it seems that way) convinced Straight Talk to quit selling smart phones with SIMS cards, maybe AT&T will get the hint, and offer an unlimited plan similar to Straight Talks plan so they can get the THOUSANDS of iphone users back to them!!

I just checked the media fire site that has the Straight Talk mobile config download, it says there have been 989,000 downloads of the Straight Talk mobile config, amazing I am sure not all have gone to iPhones but the number of downloads is amazing, no wonder Straight Talk had to quit selling the Nokia E71

I have a iphone 3g on Straight Talk. I spent a lot of time doing research and here are my adopted and tweaked instructions. I have only had usage for a short time, so I'm still waiting to see how long my iphone works on Straight Talk, which everyone who try's this is risking the disconnection of number and loss of service. I jacked these instructions from another forum and tweaked it as I fiddled with my phone. It took me 3 restore and jailbreaks to get everything working without hick-ups.

Go to Walmart and buy either a Nokia E71 or Nokia 6790 phone and a $45 unlimited card. Before you activate, make sure the sim card from either the E71 or 6790 says TF64PSIMC4 on it, if its missing the P in the part number, it will not work! If you try buying on Ebay or Craigslist make sure you ask this question before buying.

After it has been activated, use the phone for a couple of months and use the internet often. Stream lots of youtube videos to establish what will be normal use through iphone. Then take out the sim and put it in your iPhone (you will need a sim cutter to make it fit in the iPhone 4, go to ebay or amazon to buy.

Your iPhone does not need to be unlocked or jailbroken for this to work!!! In fact, don’t unlock your phone AT ALL!!!!!!!!!!!

The best thing you can do is restore your iphone to its original condition. Use your own or a borrowed AT&T sim card if possible, try getting a free one from the AT&T store, or buy a new one for 20 dollars. This will ensure an easier restore process.

Don’t put the E71 sim card into the phone until the Straight Talk configuration and/or jailbreaking and tethering apps are installed and completed. PUT YOUR SIM IN LAST!!!

You can skip this step IF you are going to jailbreak your phone for MMS to work! Just go right to the "If you want MMS" instructions. If you do not want to jailbreak your iphone, download the attached StraightTalk.zip file below, unzip it, and e-mail the StraightTalk.mobileconfig file to your iphone. Use wifi network in order to receive the email.

Open the e-mail in your iphone (which should be connected via wifi at this point so it can get e-mails) and open the attachment and install it.

You should now have access to 3G internet!!!!!

Nothing further is needed if you dont want MMS

But if you want MMS to work, you will need to jailbreak your phone. There are many ways you jailbreak depending on which iphone you own and what version of iOS you have installed. Most notably you can use blackra1n, redsn0w, PwnageTool, Spirit jailbreak, jailbreakme 2.0, and QuickPwn. These are considered the best in Spring of 2011. Google jailbreak iphone for newer and possibly better jailbreaks.

Then follow these instructions after your phone is jailbroken and is booted into cydia.

search (in cydia) for TetherME and install it. It costs $5.00, not a big deal.

The reason for installing TetherMe is to gain access to the Cellular Data Network tab, without it, you cant get MMS to work!!!)

After TetherMe is installed, exit cydia and go to your home screen. Download the attached StraightTalk.zip file below, unzip it, and e-mail the StraightTalk.mobileconfig file to your iphone. Use wifi network in order to receive the email.

How to change the carrier name from HOME to anything you want (like AT&T, or StraightTalk)

Search Cydia for a app called Fake Operator, install it. It will ask you to reboot your device, do it. After it reboots, go to settings and scroll down, you will see a new tab called Fake Operator, tap to enable fake operator, then tap on the bottom to edit the text. After you edit the text to whatever you want, reboot your phone and the new carrier text will appear at the top.

There are many ways you jailbreak depending on which iphone you own and what version of iOS you have installed. Most notably you can use blackra1n, redsn0w, PwnageTool, Spirit jailbreak, jailbreakme 2.0, and QuickPwn. I restored my iphone and upgraded to 4.2.1, then used redsnOw. I restored and jailbroke with redsnOw an additional 2 times before everything worked the way wanted.

Straight Talk hasn't been made to stop selling the E71. I bought it for my wife just last week (4-7-11) The phone is very popular for obvious reasons. Check walmart.com every few days until it comes back into stock.
