Can the iPhone only be unlocked by a 3rd party program or can you do it with instructions and a lock code?

Everything I'm reading online just says it can only be unlocked via 3rd party programs.. is that true?

    Re: Unlocking iPhone..

Check wiki for "unlock" and they'll show you a few programs for it. As far as I know, 3rd party programs are the only way to go. There are factory unlock phones. I read a blog post on blog.gizmoaccessories.com about those factory unlock phones (all legal) when I was buying a case there. I don't have the link now, but you can do a search on that site to find it.

    Re: Unlocking iPhone..

Like igiz said, it is only by software not a simple unlock code unless it is purchased factory unlocked. The latest iPhone firmware update is not unlockable yet so please do NOT update when iTunes asks you to update to the latest software. It may make your phone unusable. Previous unlocking programs include blacksn0w, redsn0w, PwnageTool.

I have a new iPhone...what the benefits of unlocking it? Doesn't it void the warranty?

    Re: Unlocking iPhone..

The only benefit is to use it on other networks besides AT&T in the USA. If you already bought it and have a 2-year contract with AT&T, then there's no benefits.

Does anyone know if any carriers unlock iPhones through Apple for you?

    Yes. From my earlier post:
