    hi, I'm new here.
Last week I bought a Iphone 3G off ebay. So I don't have to have to pay for the internet. And in two months I go back to Germany anyways, so I can use it there 2. Right now I have a unlimited Plan with AT&T. So my question is, can they find out somehow that I'm using an Iphone now? And I would like to hook my phone up to the W-Lan connection in my house, is that possible without paying additional fees?

    Greetings,
    Merlin

Evenin' Merlin. Welcome to the nuthouse.

They may well be able to see that you're using an iPhone now by your sim card. I'm not that deeply versed in the intricacies of sims to be able to give you a definitive answer. What they can do is look at your data throughput, and wonder why you're using so much. iPhones, and smartphones in general tend to generate a lot more throughput that a less-capable device. If they find smartphone-level data throughput being generated by your account when they think you're using some other type of device, I think you can expect a data plan to be added to your bill shortly thereafter.

As to connecting your new iPhone to a WLAN, no worries there. WiFi data is not (generally) provided or controlled by AT&T. In the case of your home network, that connection is provided by the ISP you subscribe to. AT&T won't care how much data you use on WiFi.

Dang that's not good. So the point is, that I'm living with host parents right now. So if the traffic would go down in two months, would they drop the additional fees again? I hope they won't set up a two year contract or something.
I'm part of an 5 member family plan, which has several Iphones too, so we probably have a lot of traffic anyways. But if they check every single phone I would be screwed.

    Re: Avoide Internet Fees ?

Yeah, I can see where that could suck pretty hard... And they can see what device is using what data, even on a family plan with multiple similar/identical devices. Each device has it's own data address, like computers on a network (which they are, after all). That address is embedded in every packet passed from or to that device.

I dunno what they'd do in terms of adding a data plan to you with the change of phone. It's probable that they'd drop any extra data charges associated with that device, once the device was demonstrably off their network. As in, you took it to Germany with you. It's also possible that there may already be a data plan in place on that family plan, seeing as there are already iPhones in use on it. Note that I have not researched the way AT&T runs their family plans for a case like this. That's for you to do. And report back here with it, please. Help us increase the community knowledgebase.

Now then, my suggestion: Talk with whoever manages the plan for the family. Let them help you out, or talk to AT&T with/for you. One thing you don't want to do is take action which may result in a sudden jump in the family plan bill, which could strain relations with your host family. AT&T would be the least of your worries, in that case.

Ok i tried it today, but I have to give them my number and if I do that they will check on me for sure. So I looked for an e-mail, but for some reason they don't have one. Can you help me out?

Oh and I found something interesting:

What do you think about that?

Did you have that chat with whichever member of your host family is managing the AT&T plan? I still think that's the logical step #1.

Email for whom? AT&T customer service? Sorry, but you've lost me on this bit.

Yes it's the At&T costumer service. I'm sorry I didn't have enough time to make a proper post this afternoon.

Ok well he kinda had the same problem as I do. I'm going to speak to a member of my guest family tomorrow.

No worries, my friend. I haven't got time to dig for an email just now, I'm fixin' to have to go to work. Have you tried AT&T's wireless support website?

Please don't think I was tryin' to dodge your questions. I'm here to learn, same as you. But sometimes, the straight-up approach beats the best hack. Keep me posted, and I'll help where I can.

Sorry, I didn't have the opportunity to ask my host mum yet. She is 74 so it'll take a while till she understands what I'm talking about.

Here they say, that it is possible if you turn off the Edge. Do you think that works?

    Re: Avoid Internet Fees ?

There's some good info here: HowardForums: Your Mobile Phone Community & Resource - TXT and e-mail from AT&T regarding "ineligible" data plan with iPhone 3G

I'm not gonna sift through a bazillion pages on another forum, though. I'm reasonably certain that you can get away with using the iPhone sans plan, at least for a little while. I'm also reasonably certain that AT&T's gonna catch on, probably sooner rather than later. Read the first page of the thread I linked to you. And when they do, it may well have an impact on your host family's plan. That could well trickle down to you, in addition to being seriously not cool. IMHO, if you're going to hack AT&T, you really ought to do it on your own plan, so as not to cause problems for others.
