Can someone tell me what the two dots are above the mail icon one is lit now

You are probably referring to the indicators which tells which home screen you are on. The illuminated one is your current screen. There should be one more than the number of home screens. The one to the far left is the Spotlight Search screen. You can touch one of the dot and move directly to that screen rather than swiping your finger. It has nothing to do with Mail, per se. You must have your Mail icon near the center of the tray.

OK thanks I was just curious. I just noticed the one on the left is a magnifying glass.
