AT&T has come out with FamilyMap service for tracking AT&T signed-up phones from a distance. Any AT&T phone is supported by this and if you're looking to track a phone that doesn't have GPS / AGPS, then the Family Map Locator will rely on tower triangulation. Other neat things the Family Map Locator allows you to do is get location updates by setting up automatic emails or text messages, locate a swiped phone, and more. If you think you can use this Locator as a spy, then you're wrong. AT&T sends tracked phones text messages letting them know they've got someone on their tail. The first 30 days are free, then you're looking at $9.99 a month for up to two phones or $14.99 for up to five.

Well, it sucks because it lets the user know they are being monitored. This results into an excuse that turns into a phone call and possibly a long argument during peak hours. Hummm, win win for at&t!!!

Actually, it sucks because ATT Family Map Locator doesn't work. I've had it work 1x out of many many tries. It really really sucks. Don't bother signing up for the majorly suckful ATT Family Map Locator - it sucks. Okay, not only does it suck, but it's completely useless, and sucky.

Really sucks. Family Map is showing my two kids phones as being a MILE AWAY, even though I am sitting right here beside them and their phones are on. Called AT&T and they said, well, maybe there are trees around your house or something...... thanks, but no thanks. If TREES are going to block the signal, then I think it's a pretty useless service if I really want to know where my children are. Maybe when I move to the desert, huh?

If GPS is not available, the approximate location is determined by cellular sites to which connected. Even if the phone has a GPS device inside, it may not work through several layers of shingles, wood, metal, asphalt or concrete inside a building.

iPhone users may be surprised to learn that AT&T's Family Locator will not use the iPhone's built in GPS capability to locate an iPhone. Incredible, but true. Check out the FAQs for the Family Locator service. According to AT&T, iPhones will be located using network triangulation. I am dumbstruck that AT&T cannot implement Family Locator using GPS with arguably the most tech-savvy phone on the market, with a full-featured and robust GPS capability. I was about to sign up for the service, but thank goodness I searched the "fine print" first!

Apple probably blocks it so that they can sell their competing MobileMe Find My Phone service.

    Re: AT&T Family Map Locator

I wonder how the accuracy of MobileMe compares to FamilyMap Locator? And, does MobileMe fully exploit the iPhone's GPS capability, unlike FamilyMap Locator?
