I am due for an upgrade very soon and I want to get a phone that is wifi enabled. I don't have a data plan and do not plan to get one, but I want a phone that has wifi capabilities so I can use lots of the applications that my new phone will come with (email, internet browser...ect.) What phones from att have wifi capabilities?

Only smartphones have wifi capabilities. AT&T now requires a data plan for these type phones. You cannot have that type of phone on your account without a data plan. If AT&T can tell if it is a smartphone, they will automatically add the $30 data plan.
Almost all of the other wireless providers have the same requirements.

doogie, your post was awhile ago, and I'm in that boat right now. What did you go with? In my research I found that the LG VU Plus has wifi but ATT considers it a quick messaging phone, not a smartphone, so it only requires a $20 text/data/combination plan. I think I'll get this phone with the $30 unlimited fam text. That's the ONLY phone I've found that gets around the stinkin' mandatory data plans. Saw the phone today and it looks pretty much like a smartphone -- apps and all!

Honestly, you are going to have to pay for a data plan, and I don't know that this is true for all data plans, but with AT&T if you use a WiFi hotspot, it does not count towards usage on your data plan.
