I have a confusing series of questions concerning the service provider I'm with now. I live in Fairbanks, Alaska and have had a plan with Cellular One for the past few years. I have had the same cell phone (a quite primitive and basic one) throughout the full coverage. Since AT&T's takeover of CellOne, they have not altered the plan I am on, but now, when I went in to try to get a new phone because my current one is beginning to wear out, they said they could not do it without converting my plan to an AT&T plan.

I do not want to change to an AT&T plan, because it would cost more for the same service I am currently getting under my old, still honored, Cell One plan. I asked them if I could just get a blank phone and put my old SIM card in it, and they said only if it was an unlocked AT&T phone; they said I could find unlocked AT&T phones online.

Now I do not know what I should to do upgrade my phone without changing my plan. Do I buy an unlocked AT&T phone and put my old Cell One SIM card in it? Do I have to also get an AT&T SIM card online? If I did get an AT&T SIM card, could I have it activated for my current account or will I still have to change everything and go to an AT&T plan?

I'm so confused.
