I know that ATT forces you to get $30 data plan when you use a smart phone....is there a similar requirement when you have a texting phone (aka...one with qwerty keyboard and/or touchscreen)? The reason I ask is because I am eleigible for an upgrade on my phone but all the ones that have qwerty keyboard (which I would like to have) also say that they require at least a $20 texting plan for me to get them. Is that a requirement just for activation or do you HAVE to have that plan just to use the phones? For instance, could I buy a phone say off ebay that has a qwerty keyboard and use it without them automatically forcing a higher monthly fee onto me like they would if it was a smartphone?
And, if the answer is yes, my next question would be: what are some good phones with the qwerty keyboard that are NOT smartphones? I would love to have one with wifi (though I'm not sure they exist) and also good reception/voice quality and a decent camera are pretty much the only other things on my wish list

Re: text plan
Yes, the $20 data and/or texting plan is required as long as you are using the qwerty phone. The texing phone is not a smart phone. Smart phones require a $30 data plan - texting is extra.
Any qwerty phone is considered a texting phone and requires a $20 texting and/or data plan. The $30 family texting satisfies that requirement. Data plans are not required on texting phones, just at least $20 worth of addons as either texting plans or data plans or a combination worth $20.

Re: text plan
Yeah the family texting plan is great, four of us share unlimited texts for 20 dollars.
