Iphone 4 battle

So im collage student and i use my iphone 4 religiously I use it for everything. I love the speed of it i currently use it for T-mobile and im really itching to sell it for some money to go on a trip with my friends. A buddy of mine has a Iphone 3GS 32gb said he would give to me his just cause he knows im selling mine to go on this trip next month. My concern is will it be as fast as the iphone 4 what will i loose by doing this? If worst comes to worse ill just use some of my student loan to go on this trip but i rather leave it for school.
