Folks -- First-time poster, so please be gentle with me! I've had the Family Plan with the rollover minutes for about 10 years. We both have old Motorola V551 phones. We have been without a contract for several years and I had the phones unlocked back in July 2006 while in Australia. (FYI, the 551s are quad frequency and work GREAT overseas!) We don't need smartphones, so I am confining my decision-making to flip phones only.
For about 6 months, I have been getting notices from AT&T to go in and upgrade our phones. My dilemma and decision-making trade space are along these lines:
- The phones AT&T is offering right now are the Pantech Breeze III, the LG A340, and the Samsung Rugby II. The Pantech is basically not in the competitive range because it is only dual frequency, if I read the specs correctly. For the remaining two phones, is one clearly better than the other? My main criterion is reception.
- Meanwhile, T-Mobile is offering essentially the same family plan for $10/month less. T-Mobile is offering two Samsung phones: T159 and T-259. How do these phones compare with the AT&T phones?
- In my area, if you can believe each company's coverage map, T-Mobile appears to have better coverage. But, the nomenclature is different and both are subjective, so, who knows?
- How likely is a waiver of activation fee from one or both companies? There's no harm in asking, which I plan to do.
- If neither company will waive the activation fee, and if I throw in ~$40/phone to get them unlocked, I'm almost close enough to consider buying unlocked phones and then either just using my AT&T SIMs in the new phones or just getting T-Mobile SIMs
- If I head down the path of buying unlocked phones, are there brands or individual phones that clearly get better reception than the rest of the pack?
A basic question I have is if the phones have sufficiently changed in the last ten years where it makes sense to upgrade? We want phones for just making calls. We have no need for smartphones, texting, or surfing.
Thanks in advance!
