Hello.
Comments please....
Now that Telstra will phase out their CDMA service, I bet you any money
that will mean that Orange will ALSO phase out their CDMA services.
Orange phones have their own mobile towers only in Sydney, Newcastle,
Wollongong, Melbourne & Bendigo. Everywhere else, they roam to Telstra
CDMA.
When Telstra CDMA ends, it is not worth Orange's while to keep their
tiny CDMA towers & network going and furthermore, no idiot will buy
their services just to use them in Sydney, Newcastle, Melbourne &
Bendigo only.
So you will see CDMA in Australia die completely.
Do you think maybe another provider will buy the CDMA network whole,
and run it themselves afresh? Like Orange themselves, maybe? Or
Virgin or Optus?
Cheers,
Noodle.

I suspect most of Orange's client base use it only in those areas.
Plus, demand will still be there for PSTN termination numbers with a
follow-me mobile service. My guess, though, is that Hutchison will
flog its Orange customers to Telstra well before Telstra's CDMA network
closes.

Unlikely - the only reason it existed was the Commonwealth's/Telstra's
obligation to maintain rural services. I can't see anyone taking up
the 4:1 cost burden of running CDMA v GSM without needing to.
(PS You're a bit a of a thread whore aren't you? Subject lines like
that put John D Leister to shame... that's not you, is it, John?)

I doubt it.

There was a rumor circulating that Optarse were interested in buying it
(Tel$tra CDMA) asa going concern. Whether there is any truth to it is another
matter entirely.

But would Telstra want to sell it? Dont think so given that they want to use
the same band for their 3g stuff...

Correct. It won't be for sale as a going network, they need to shut it
down to run UMTS in the same 850MHz spectrum the CDMA network is
currently using.

Nope - telstra will deploy in parallel - there is enough spectrum to
run CDMA and UMTS at the same time. When UMTS is completely rolled out
CDMA will be switched off.

Why would they?
