Anyone know is/if/when coverage will be provided by any of the carriers
between stations in the loop?
It's becoming long overdue....!

"I'll have to call you back - I'm heading into the loop..." - right up
there with "Where are you?" <rolls eyes>

Im having difficulty getting the phone to log onto some of the stations when
it comes out of the tunnel. Is anyone else seeing this with Telstra?

I am in Sydney and sometimes it only takes a couple of seconds, other times
it can take over a minute.

It may also depend on the firmware in the phone.

This is to do with the phone's searching algorithm - how often the MS scans
for and decodes BCCH, and what happens when no BCCH are present. GSM 05.08
and 03.22 contain details on this, but simply put the reason for the
variance in time is what 'state' the MS is in when a usable BCCH
re-appears - i.e. it might be seconds away from scanning that particular
carrier or it might be in a discontinous sleep mode.

Recent phones I've had allow me to configure the search activity
as a battery saving feature. I remember one as having 3
settings for network search - continuous, fast or slow. My
Siemens S55 just has network fast-search as on or off.

Please tell me GSM Experts, (as I am not)
Would the fact the up 1000 mobile phones suddenly came into range of the
first cell outside the loop (as the train emerges from the GSM dead tunnel)
have any impact on the "login" time?
I would have thought so.

The short answer is no.
In real life, these phones will have been turned on before
entering the tunnel, and will have registered with the network
then.
On exiting, they'll likely find a new cell to camp on. It's
most likely that the new cell will be in the same "Location
Area" as the previous cell, so the phone will have no reason to
interact with the network (to transmit) at all.
In the unlikely event the new cell has a different LAC (Location
Area Code), those phones will need to do a location update,
while remaining registered. Otherwise, they can't be paged for
incoming calls (the cells in the wrong LAC would be paging
them).
If the train had remained in the tunnel for hours (so that the
location update timers had expired on these phones) then they
would need to renegotiate registration.
In the normal course of events, the delay in finding a signal on
exit from the tunnel is just that - delay in finding a signal
because constant scanning isn't done (to conserve battery
power).

I asked has anyone had any POORer than usual performance recently.
The logging on effect has always been like that, so its not relevant to the
issue

Its only ever taken <30 secs for me. Sometimes now it is so bad, that, for
example, it doesnt even pick up coverage at say, Flagstaff. Not until Melb
central.
