How's your flip hinge? Can you see any cracks?
I'm trying to gather some evidence that they're faulty.

Why? Overextend it did you? Or did you do the "flick it open" trick.?
I'll give you a hint, Motorola V3 customers haven't been able in the past or
now to claim warranty for the exact same above reasons, in that has been
used/subjected to force beyond its accepted or intended tolerances, why
should NEC be any different?

Unless I can find some cracked-but-not-yet-broken examples to prove they're
not the result of being abused.

Wrong again. If the bulk of them are cracked,
it cant be abuse, its lousy design, stupid.

Cracked but not deformed would be pretty hard to blame on abuse (although
I'm sure the bastards would still try it on).
