I have an Oz sim here with Telstra and works though it is not the same
as being in Oz using GSM global roaming occasionally. Shame about the
international SMSing over here!
I'll sit on it for now watching this thread and consider buying a phone
here.

It won't be a problem, China uses the same GSM bands as us (900/1800)
