I have a friend who has moved up north to tom price. He doesnt have a
landline, only a telstra mobile. The cheapest call rate I can find is
through telstra home phone which offers $1.50 calls plus 37c connection
fee for 20 minutes. It is getting annoying because I often want to talk
for longer than 20 minutes, so I have to watch the clock and often make
multiple phone calls. Does anyone know a more user friendly or cheaper
way to call a telsta mobiles?

The cheapest nominal per-minute rate to a Telstra mobile (ie not capped
per call or per month) I've seen is Virgin Mobile's 'Motor Mouth'
    pre-paid offer:

    $25/month (30 days), $25 included calls
10c/minute in 30sec blocks (ie 5c/30sec block), plus 25c flagfall
Rate applies to any fixed or mobile phone in Australia, 24x7
    https://www.virginmobile.com.au/rate...al_offers.html

That makes $2.25 for 20 min, but compared to the Telstra offer you
    mention:
    - If your call is short, it's cheaper. It takes less than 5 min to
reach $1.50 from your Telstra fixed line
    - Call for longer than 20 min and still get the cheap rate (ie only $1
for another 10 min, instead of more than $3)
    - Calling from your mobile means you can call from wherever there's
Optus/Virgin coverage, not just from home

    Depends on whether you'd spend $25 a month - about 8 half-hour calls.
Would you make 2 a week? Also involves either swapping SIM cards or
    using/buying another mobile.

Don't watch the clock, use the egg-timer-thingy on your mobile, set for
    10 mins.
Cheaper way is telstra prepaid after 9pm and weekends. That means
redialling every 10 mins (35c), but hangup and redial on a mobile is
much faster than from a landline.

Except for the eternity it takes for the call to be set up each time, of
    course.

What if changed his bonus option to My Hour, if its possible and talk
for a specified hour for free (up to 20 mins at a time)...even you call
at 2 minutes before the end of the hour, the free call is
honoured....worth looking at - need to be disciplined using it tho.

    I'm with you!
If I make a 20 minute phone-call it includes 15 minutes of me wishing you'd
    shut the **** up!!
Just how much information do you need to convey that it takes more than 20
    minutes of talking?!!?

5 seconds is an eternity? What planet do you live on?

You mean, the first 20 minutes of the call is free

Guess that depends which mobile network you're on. Optus seems to take up
to 20 seconds to connect a call more often than not.

Bull****. And that is hardly an eternity anyway.

yes, that is correct. the first 20 minutes is free
but you can hang up after 20 mins and re-dial.

Might be a bit of congestion in your, or there, area

I'd thought that, but I'm bang in the middle of the CBD, surrounded by
    cells and microcells.

I'd actually wondered if my calls were being "de-prioritised" because I'm
on prepaid. Optus has always taken a somewhat punitive approach with their
prepaid users (no call waiting, no call forwarding, etc etc).
