    Nothing, you watch.

    > i hear its going well in tassie

Like hell it is as far as ever being competitive with adsl is concerned.

    THATS what matters.

Data has to come in and go out through someone. Telstra will still get
income. What is better than power lines is wi-max. The RUMOUR is that they
are going to do it and if they do, it will be interesting to have wireless
broadband, efficiently, everywhere in Oz near a town of any size. No need
for ADSL up a phone line. Whoever gets it first is going to get a massive
    amount of users!!

    Not necessarily.

Any shared bandwidth system has to be worse than a non shared one.

Those mindlessly rabbiting of about the alleged slowness
of adsl clearly hasnt used a wireless system.

Nope, there's a few fundamental reasons why most arent bothering.

If, and it's a bloody big if, they do it at the right price.

Years ago, when FoxTel was starting out in Oz, I, and many, _many_
others told them that to get good penetration they needed a basic
subscription model with a "pick what other channels you want" mix, with
channels grouped in cost, and packaged as well, such as "all the sports
channels" for $xx, but allow for someone who wanted, say, the horse
racing and a premium movie channel and a comedy channel, at individual
prices. Of course, the morons thought they would make more money by
forcing people to buy *big* packages to get all the channels they want,
which, of course, they didn't, so take-up of cable in Oz is minimal, as
    are profits.

No doubt saner heads will prevail in the WiMAX roll out... (But I, for
one, am not holding my breath)

    Cheers,
    Gary B-)

The real reason that payTV takeup is poor is because our free to air TV is
pretty decent and they dont offer much more than what you can get for free.

    > No doubt saner heads will prevail in the WiMAX roll out...

Bet it wont, largely because telstra has driven down the cost
of adsl to barely more than dialup if you use the net much.

THAT is what is the killer for WiMAX and what will see it mostly
get used by those who cant get adsl or who need portabability.

    > (But I, for one, am not holding my breath)

    Bugger.

Errr Rod you are wrong on that one. Data definitely DOES have to come in and
    go out through someone.

Depends on the reliability and speed at which you get it. In the case of
wireless broadband that actually is efficient and not the **** we have now,
it may also depend on your need to have internet anywhere.

One being that wi-max isnt around yet in Oz mainland (excluding Tas)?

True. Not going to pay a bucketload for something new and unusual.

Anyone with half a mind could see that idea had sense. There are very few
sports that interest me and I like to be entertained when I turn the TV on.
That's one reason I dont watch it weekends during the day if I am home
(excepting since the Bogey stuff started).

    > No doubt saner heads will prevail in the WiMAX roll out... (But I, for

I sincerely doubt it. I know some stories from the Optus F.O. rollout. One
glaring one - they thought they were finished so shafted the guy who did
most of the planning and a hell of a lot of work. Just told him "last day
today" and he was an employee (high money). So he finished, went elsewhere
where things were fine but not fabulous and 3 months later got a phone call
telling him that he HAS to come back as if he didn't have a choice. He told
them "No F'n way unless you double my salary" and without hesitation they
said "OK" so he went back. They paid more in the 18 months thereafter than
they would have if they had common sense.

Apparently they has everything worked out for this fibre network to get them
