Noticed a new mobile number starting with '0500 xxx xxx' for the first time.
Have they finally run out of 04xx numbers?? I thought the 05xx numbers were
old analog numbers?

Perhaps you saw one of the old 0500 numbers (if you had one you could
set it up to try you at various numbers until you answered... eg if
someone called you on 0500123456 the network would try your home, then
mobile, then ..., until you answered). Have a look here

0500 number were used with telstra's telepath service. Just a redirect
service, brilliant idea but nobody would ring it cause they thought it was a
premium price number. Analogue numbers were prefixed with 018 (&019 from
memory)

018, then 015, then 019, 014, and lastly 017 (019 and 014 might have been
the other way around)

I had a Telepath One Number when they first came out, they were great.
I wish they were still available.
As others have stated that is the 0500 prefix you have seen.

They became crap after MNP, because you couldn't do double-diversion.
Mine was directed to an Optus mobile, and it would then go to Optus mobile
voicemail.
Come MNP, that stopped happening and there was nothing they could do to fix
it.
